Hello everyone,

I have a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA with the popular rolling boxes that can be stored inside. The problem is the following: Whenever I pull out or push in the boxes, they sometimes fall out. This is not only annoying but can also cause damage.

My question to you is:

What is the best way to prevent the rolling boxes in the Kallax shelf from falling out when pulling them out or pushing them in?

Are there any practical tips, modifications, or accessories that can solve this issue?

I look forward to your answers and advice – experience-based tips are especially welcome!

Thanks in advance!

Hello Doti58,

This is a common issue with the rolling boxes in the Kallax system. Usually, it happens because the drawer slides don’t have an integrated lock that holds the boxes in place when fully extended.

A proven tip is to install small stops or stoppers on the shelf to prevent the boxes from rolling off the tracks. Some users attach small metal brackets or even plastic spacers to the back panel or the shelf base.

Another option is to adjust the drawer slides so they offer a bit more resistance. If that’s not possible, you can also switch to so-called “soft-close” slides, which often come with built-in stop functions.

Don’t worry too much; this problem is well known, and with a few small adjustments, it can usually be solved quite easily.

I would simply attach small plastic or rubber bumpers to the shelf where the boxes rest. This way, they won't slide through.

Exactly. Additionally, it should be noted that IKEA Kallax drawer runners do not have built-in locks by default, so the boxes can easily fall out when pulled out fully.

The best solution is therefore to either install mechanical end stops or use runners with integrated end stops. When making modifications, attention must be paid to the material strength to ensure the shelf’s stability is not compromised.

Another method is to use Velcro or magnetic fasteners to prevent the boxes from falling out. These are especially useful if the boxes are frequently pulled out completely and transported.

I totally understand your problem. It has happened to me all the time, and it’s not just annoying—it can also make you worry that the boxes might get damaged.

What helped me was attaching small rubber bumpers to the back of the sliding rails. They not only soften the stop but also prevent the boxes from rolling out too far.

Sometimes it also helps to pay a little more attention to the handle when pulling the boxes out and to pull more evenly—but of course, that’s not a technical solution, just a tip for better handling 🙂.

Hello Doti58,

here is a brief guide on how to prevent rolling boxes from falling out of the Kallax shelf:

1. First, check that the drawer slides are installed correctly and do not have too much play.
2. Attach end stops made of metal or plastic at the ends of the slides. Small brackets or purpose-made stoppers work well for this.
3. Alternatively, you can add small spacers to the back panel or shelf base to ensure the boxes cannot be wider than the drawer slides.
4. Use felt or rubber pads on the stop points to prevent slipping and simultaneously protect the material.
5. Option: Replace the drawer slides with higher-quality models that have integrated end stops.

Common mistakes include incorrect measurements when installing the stops or overloading the slides. Make sure that the mechanism does not get blocked and that the boxes can still be pulled out smoothly.

If you like, I can assist you further with selecting the right materials.
