ᐅ After installation on an uneven floor, my KALLAX unit never stands completely straight – is leveling possible?

giga59Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit at home. I have the problem that after assembly, it doesn’t stand completely level on my floor. Since the floor isn’t perfectly even, the shelf wobbles and leans. My question is: Is there a way to level the KALLAX shelf on an uneven floor so that it stands stable and horizontal? What solutions or aids can you recommend to effectively compensate for small irregularities without damaging the furniture? I look forward to your experiences and tips.
Hello giga59,
First of all, it is normal for KALLAX shelves to not stand perfectly on uneven floors, since the furniture piece does not have adjustable feet. As a simple solution, I would recommend placing furniture glides with felt pads or small washers under the feet. You can adjust these by feel or using a spirit level.
Adjustable furniture glides are often the best option, as they allow fine tuning. Alternatively, some hardware stores offer special leveling wedges that can be discreetly placed underneath.

Adjustable furniture glides are often the best solutionI agree. I once tried to level a shelf on uneven laminate flooring using some old material – that wasn’t a good idea because it didn’t provide stable support. A solid solution simply gives you more peace of mind. Sometimes thin rubber pads under the feet can also help prevent slipping. Good luck with it!
Hello giga59,
Here is a brief guide on how to level a shelf on an uneven floor:
1. Use a spirit level to measure exactly how uneven the floor is at the location.
2. Carefully place the KALLAX frame on the floor and mark the legs that are not resting flat.
3. Get adjustable furniture glides or plastic shims of varying thicknesses.
4. Insert the glides under the marked legs and adjust them until the shelf is level with a spirit level.
Important: Be careful not to add too much adjustment, so the stability is maintained. I have also experimented with small felt pads, but these are mainly suitable for minimizing scratches, not for large-scale height adjustments.
If you want, I can also provide tips on how to secure the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping.

My question is: Is there a way to level a KALLAX shelf on an uneven floor so that it stands stable and perfectly horizontal? This issue is not as simple as it might seem. The degree of floor unevenness as well as the materials of the shelf’s foot pads and the floor surface have a significant impact on stability.
The first step is an accurate measurement, for example using a digital level or a laser leveling device. This allows you to determine the exact difference in millimeters.
After that, I recommend using adjustable feet or furniture caster wheels—these allow you to individually set the height at each foot. IKEA does not offer adjustable feet for the KALLAX, but there are compatible solutions available from third-party suppliers.
Please also keep in mind that with larger differences in floor slope, stability can be compromised, and securing the shelf firmly to the wall (for example, with height adjustment at the wall mount) is often essential to prevent tipping.
Optionally, you can also make custom shims from wood or plastic that are precisely sanded to size. Using simple washers alone may cause the shelf to tip when loaded.
