Hello everyone, after a renovation in my apartment, I have some IKEA Platsa furniture that is unfortunately quite covered with dust, fine construction debris, and paint splatters. Since these pieces are made of coated engineered wood, I would like to know the best way to clean them thoroughly and gently without damaging the surface or risking discoloration. What cleaning products and tools do you recommend, and are there any specific procedures I should definitely follow, especially after renovation work? I look forward to practical tips and advice!

Oh, I know that feeling all too well! It’s really frustrating after renovation work 😅! My recommendation: start by wiping off the loose dust with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. Avoid using aggressive cleaners at all costs, as they can damage the surface of PLATSA! For stubborn stains, use a mild dish soap mixed with water. And very important: don’t wipe with too much water, as the material can swell! You’ve got this!

Your question is very good because the PLATSA elements can be quite sensitive to improper handling. I recommend the following approach: - First, carefully remove dry dirt using a vacuum cleaner or a dry microfiber cloth. - For stubborn paint splatters, soften the paint gently first (for example, with some warm water and a soft cloth). - Do not use harsh solvents, as these can dissolve the plastic coating. - Then wipe with a mild cleaner that does not contain abrasive particles (such as mild dish soap), using a damp cloth, and dry immediately. Also important: avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, as these can cause microscopic scratches. Could you also specify which types of paints or materials are involved in the splatters? Then I could provide you with more specific advice.

I consider a structured approach to be beneficial: 1. Remove coarse dust and sand using a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth. 2. For paint splatters, it is best to use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a neutral detergent. 3. Avoid using any solvents or alcohol-based cleaners to prevent damage to the surface. 4. After cleaning, immediately wipe the area with a dry cloth to prevent moisture penetration. This systematic cleaning helps prevent consequential damage and preserves the appearance of the furniture over the long term.

Exactly that! I once thought alcohol would be fine, but afterwards my PLATSA didn’t look good at all. I believe a bit of patience and gentle cleaning really pays off! And hey, a little tip: if you add a tiny amount of vinegar to the water, it removes odors and adds shine – but really just a small amount, otherwise it can be risky 😉.

Thank you for the clarification, Domau0. The stains are mainly from white water-based renovation paint, with some painter’s tape residue in places. I will follow your steps carefully. In this case, should I soften the paint first, or is wiping it off with a damp cloth enough? Are there any risks that water could cause the furniture material to swell or leave permanent stains?
