Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to know which care products are specifically recommended to extend the lifespan of these furniture pieces. I am particularly interested in which products are suitable for surfaces made of white-coated particleboard, without causing discoloration or damage. It would also be helpful to know how often these products should ideally be applied and if there are any special differences in care between older and newer furniture.

Do you have experience with particular cleaners, maintenance products, or protective treatments that provide long-lasting protection? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated so I can achieve the best results and keep my furniture looking as good as new for as long as possible. Thank you in advance!

To extend the lifespan of BILLY furniture, it is recommended to regularly care for the surface using a mild, non-abrasive cleaning agent. Preferably use a damp, soft cloth and avoid harsh chemicals such as alcohol or ammonia, as these can damage the melamine coating.

For additional protection, occasional treatment with water-based furniture care lotions designed specifically for chipboard-coated furniture is recommended. These maintain the surface and reduce susceptibility to scratches and stains. Application should be done approximately every 3-4 months.

Older furniture benefits from a more thorough cleaning before treatment to remove dirt and deposits. Avoid products containing wax or oil, as these can leave unsightly residues on melamine coatings.

I agree with this. Water-based care products are the best. For example, I use 'Pledge furniture polish' – it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

Important: Do not use abrasive materials, as they will damage the surface.

I would like to add that when dealing with BILLY furniture, using specially designed cleaning cloths is advisable. Microfiber cloths are ideal because they clean gently and do not cause scratches.

This is where neutral, pH-balanced cleaners are essential. Products labeled as “neutral” do not attack the surface and help prevent discoloration.

It is also recommended to clean up spills immediately to avoid liquid damage. For occasional stains, mild-based gentle cleaners are suitable, but abrasive or alcohol-based substances should be avoided.

Recommendation: Perform a thorough treatment with a water-based furniture oil once every quarter to protect the surface, otherwise wipe regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth. When caring for older furniture, take a slower and more cautious approach, as the coating may be more sensitive.
