ᐅ KALLAX doors keep swinging open when the windows are open – what can be done?

Good morning everyone,

I have a problem with my KALLAX shelves from IKEA. The doors often open by themselves when I have windows open in the room, especially when drafts cause changes in temperature and humidity. The shelf is freestanding, and the doors usually close without magnets or anything similar, but they are adjusted so that they should close properly.

My question: What mechanical or building physics reasons could cause the KALLAX doors to open repeatedly as soon as a window is open? And what can I do about it without resorting to expensive solutions or modifications? Are there any simple tricks or small aids that might fix the problem?

Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

When windows are open, an airflow is created that, depending on the position and air pressure difference, causes either negative or positive pressure in the room.

That is basically correct. However, I would not only consider air pressure but also the material properties of the KALLAX.

The light particleboard slightly reacts to changes in humidity, which can cause the doors to warp a little. This further facilitates opening when there is a draft.

Therefore, I would recommend not only using magnetic catches but also maintaining a stable humidity level. Monitoring this with a hygrometer might help.

Good point, pinbo! Additionally, it’s worth considering whether the doors were installed correctly.

Are all the hinges properly aligned? Even a slight misalignment can worsen the problem.

Does anyone have experience with whether the frame from KALLAX sufficiently stabilizes the doors, or if some doors are simply built “too light”?

Hinges are basically straightforward. When doors are sagging, check and adjust them. Problem solved.

If that’s not enough, only mechanical aids like magnets can help.

Thank you all for the detailed responses and the various perspectives, especially regarding the building physics aspects like material warping.

I will check if the hinges are adjusted correctly and then try self-adhesive magnetic catches.

In addition, I will get a hygrometer to better monitor humidity and temperature and see if this helps narrow down the issue.

If that’s not enough, I’ll get back with further questions. Thanks again to everyone who provided such knowledgeable yet practical help!
