I am currently considering whether IKEA Hemnes furniture is generally suitable for DIY modifications. Specifically, I am interested in dressers and sideboards. I would like to know if the materials—mostly pine wood with a lacquer finish—are easy to work with, such as drilling, sanding, and painting, without compromising stability. Additionally, how well do the joining methods and fittings hold up for custom adjustments? Perhaps someone has experience modifying Hemnes furniture, for example changing the height, adding extra shelves, or installing LED lighting? I would appreciate any detailed insights, especially if potential problems and their solutions are discussed.

This is a very good and detailed question! IKEA Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid pine, which provides a sturdy base for DIY modifications. This is a major advantage compared to furniture made from particleboard or MDF. On the other hand, the solid wood component presents certain challenges when it comes to refinishing. For example, you need to use high-quality drill bits and pre-drill the wood carefully to avoid cracking.

This is exactly where surface treatment comes into play: the white lacquer on Hemnes is usually quite durable, but if you sand it, you have to be sure to repaint carefully or apply a primer beforehand to avoid a blotchy finish.

The joinery with dowels, screws, and often mortise and tenon joints is fairly traditional. This allows for modifications, but doesn’t give complete freedom in design. For instance, the side panels already have pre-drilled holes for shelves, which cannot be moved freely without damaging the material. Installing additional lighting is generally manageable, as there is usually enough space behind the furniture to run cables without affecting visible surfaces.

I recommend measuring the furniture carefully before starting any modifications and, if possible, practicing on small test pieces. Those with the right tools (a drill with fine drill bits, precise sandpaper, and suitable paint) can use Hemnes furniture very flexibly, but patience is important.

Wow, great question and detailed answer from bapar! I’ve remodeled several Hemnes dressers, and I have to say: they are really a dream for DIY enthusiasts! 😃 Especially because the wood is solid and relatively soft, you can easily work with simple tools. Of course, you shouldn’t just drill randomly, but pre-drill properly, otherwise the wood will split very easily.

I can confirm that! I personally find the combination of wood and paint simply perfect. After a bit of sanding and repainting, everything looks like new, and you can really customize the furniture beautifully.

If you want to install LED strips, go ahead and do it on the back side – there’s enough space for cables and such. And the shelves can – if you apply a little trickery – be fixed on different screw holes or even by drilling your own holes. As long as you don’t rout out the side panels, it holds really well.

So: go for it! It’s definitely worth it and a lot of fun! 💪

Many thanks to antonios39 for the well-formulated question. I completely understand how important it is that the materials are easy to work with and that you don’t face unexpected problems after remodeling. I have also wondered how durable the paint finish remains after sanding — it always frustrates me when the paint doesn’t hold up or looks uneven.

I find your concern very understandable. I once experienced trying to add shelves to another piece of IKEA wooden furniture, and unfortunately the wood damaged too easily when drilling. My advice is to proceed very slowly and carefully. It also helps to test how the surface reacts in an inconspicuous spot.

One more thought: I often found the joining methods somewhat limited if you want to do something completely different. Sometimes it’s worth reinforcing the connection points with your own solutions, especially if you don’t want to risk stability.

I definitely wish you patience and hope others here will share their positive experiences!

Additional information: I have already worked on several Hemnes furniture pieces in the DIY sector and can provide some specific tips to avoid common mistakes and carry out modifications cleanly.

- Pre-drilling is essential, using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw to be used later. This prevents splitting.
- When sanding the paint, fine sandpaper (grit P240 or finer) is recommended; this smooths out imperfections without damaging the wood quickly.
- Afterwards, you need to apply a suitable primer that adheres well to pine wood, followed by the topcoat – acrylic paints from hardware stores usually work well.
- The Hemnes construction uses dowel and screw connections, with pre-drilled holes for adjustable shelves. If you want custom arrangements, precise marking is necessary and, if needed, reinforcements in the side panels, such as small wooden strips or metal brackets.
- For installing LED lighting, the back or inside of the doors is ideal, allowing you to hide cables neatly.

In conclusion: planning and patience are key. Take your time and try small tests with leftover parts. The materials are sturdy but not infinitely flexible; with effort and care, you can achieve very good modifications.
