Ferrispau224 Sep 2021 20:07Hello everyone,
I have a specific question about optimizing Ikea Brimnes furniture, especially for small spaces. I live in a small apartment, and storage space is really limited. I find the BRIMNES series generally very functional and clean, but I’m wondering how to best use this furniture to make the most of the limited space.
I’m particularly interested in practical tips on combining the individual pieces (e.g., dressers, beds with storage, wardrobes) as well as using clever additional solutions (like organizers, dividers, possible modifications, or custom additions). How can I best arrange the furniture, which functions are often overlooked, and are there any tricks to significantly increase storage capacity without having to buy new furniture?
I look forward to any experiences, concrete tips, and possibly critical advice about the series, especially for small apartments. Thanks in advance for reading and for your input!

- Beds with built-in drawers offer sufficient storage space for bedding, clothing, or other infrequently used items.
- Dressers with multiple drawers allow for good organization, especially when combined with storage boxes that help structure the interior.
- Corner solutions or modular additions from the series help make use of room corners that would otherwise remain unused.
However, care should be taken not to choose furniture that is too large, so the space remains open and airy.
- Using storage boxes or baskets inside the drawers effectively optimizes space utilization.
The BRIMNES fronts are closed, so in small rooms there is less visible storage compared to open shelves. Therefore, clear organization inside the furniture is essential.
A tip: white or light colors in BRIMNES are perfect for making the room appear larger. Any modifications or major changes are rather limited with BRIMNES, as the furniture is pre-manufactured. The focus should be on optimized organization.

Keatondra25 Sep 2021 07:58Hello, I would like to add that in small rooms, careful planning is especially important when using Ikea BRIMNES furniture. The combination of bed and dresser can offer great potential for versatile use.
- Those who use the BRIMNES bed with drawers benefit from storage space that often remains unused otherwise. It is advisable to organize the divided drawers with different boxes for separate categories (e.g., shoes, textiles, seasonal items).
- For dressers, custom-fit compartment dividers can be used to subdivide the available space. These dividers make it easier to find items and prevent clutter.
- Even though the furniture shares the same style and color, they should be arranged to allow enough space for movement—the furniture is rather sturdy and less flexible in placement, so an accurate measurement of the room beforehand is highly recommended.
- One more tip: use the tops of the furniture as surfaces or for decorative boxes, as long as the room height allows. This way, vertical space is used effectively.
I want to emphasize that rushed remodeling with BRIMNES furniture is usually not advisable. It is better to choose storage solutions and internal divisions that suit your needs carefully.

However, you should make sure that the furniture isn’t too large so the room stays airy. That’s a sensible point, but I wonder if this is a fundamental issue with the BRIMNES series in small apartments. The furniture tends to be bulky and traditionally built, which makes quick removals or custom adjustments difficult.

I want to emphasize that hectic remodeling with BRIMNES usually isn’t practical.Keatondra is referring to the limitations I also see. If you really want to get the most out of it, you should consider BRIMNES more as a base and work with additional modular systems.
Alternatively, there are furniture series specifically designed for versatile use in small spaces. For me, the question is whether the effort for accessories and DIY modifications with BRIMNES might be too high.
But to return to the original question: optimization always starts with cutting out unnecessary pieces of furniture. In my opinion, pure storage optimization with BRIMNES is only limitedly possible since the design isn’t meant for flexible room use.

Optimization always starts with avoiding unnecessary furniture pieces. This is a good and very important point. Especially in small spaces, it is crucial to carefully select which furniture is truly necessary.
Only then does optimization with BRIMNES furniture really make sense. It becomes clear that a minimalist approach with a clear prioritization of use is essential.
Additionally, I recommend focusing not only on placement but also on optimizing the internal organization of individual drawers and compartments. As mentioned earlier, organizers (boxes, drawer dividers) are key.
Finally: BRIMNES cannot be expanded indefinitely with add-on systems, but within its existing dimensions, much more storage space can be gained through good organization than it initially seems.
