Hello everyone, I am planning to remodel and redesign my Ikea Platsa shelving unit. I have a question: which paint color works best for updating the Ikea PLATSA to make the furniture both modern and versatile? I’m not only thinking about the shade but also the type of paint: should I choose traditional wood colors, or are matte or glossy finishes more suitable? Are there specific recommendations for preparing the surface before painting? I want the shelving unit to be as durable and resilient as possible, so advice on the right paint would be very helpful. So, which paint would you suggest for remodeling the Ikea PLATSA and why?

What kind of surface are you imagining – something durable for a children’s room or more stylish for a living room? Thanks for the important hint. The shelf will mainly be placed in the living room and should have a modern, understated look. So preferably durable, but rather elegant than playful. I was thinking of a matte or satin finish, as the surface shouldn’t be too reflective.

Sanding is the very first step. Afterwards, I recommend a bonding primer, such as Zapon lacquer or special melamine primers designed specifically for these synthetic resin surfaces.Sounds reasonable, but are there any alternatives? I would prefer not to work with very strong chemicals, since I am aiming for some environmental compatibility and health safety.

One option is special acrylic bonding primers, which are often environmentally friendly and low in odor. Additionally, it is essential to check the product instructions—these usually include information on environmental compatibility and health safety.
The question is whether you plan to apply the primer by spray or with a brush/roller, as this significantly affects consumption and emissions.
An important tip: When choosing a color for Platsa, consider the compatibility with any existing screws or fittings. Lighter colors tend to show small scratches or dents less than darker ones. If you want a lively appearance, I would recommend a subtle shade of gray, such as a warm gray that suits many interior styles.
Also, matte surfaces show fingerprints less prominently, which is especially beneficial for white versions.
Don’t underestimate the sanding process during application – I use 220-grit sandpaper and work carefully to ensure the paint adheres properly.
