Hello everyone, I recently got an Ikea Pax wardrobe, but I primarily want to use it as a shoe cabinet. My question is how to organize the Pax most effectively for shoe storage. The standard shelves are mainly designed for clothing, so what is more practical: shelves or drawers? What about special inserts or shoe boxes? I want to use the space optimally to store, for example, sneakers, boots, and other shoes in an organized and easily accessible way. Maybe you have tips for practical modules or layouts inside the Pax that work particularly well. What experiences do you have with shoe organization in the Pax, especially regarding tidiness and quick access? I’m looking forward to your suggestions!

First of all, I would suggest clearly defining what efficiency means: Is it about maximizing capacity or quick accessibility? These goals are not always the same.

- Shelves are more flexible since you can adjust the height of the shelves according to shoe height, for example, sneakers versus boots.
- Drawers, on the other hand, are more convenient but often take up more space per shoe, especially for taller models.

In my opinion, you should focus on modularity: Non-slip shelves and transparent shoe boxes make it much easier to keep track. They also reduce dust and allow stacking.

I also recommend using a combination of open shelves for quick access and closed boxes for long-term storage to achieve a good balance.

This is an important point. To add to that: For organizing an Ikea Pax unit as a shoe cabinet, I recommend the following approach based on verified utility studies and practical experience reports:

- Use height-adjustable shelves from the Pax accessories to accommodate different types of shoes (sneakers, dress shoes, boots) efficiently.
- For boots, it is advisable to fully utilize the cabinet depth and set the shelves slightly higher so the boots can stand upright.
- Drawer inserts with dividers help to effectively sort small shoes, such as children’s shoes or sandals.
- Use breathable boxes or fabric bags to protect shoes from dust while still allowing air circulation.
- Labeling the boxes or using transparent materials makes quick identification easier.

All the mentioned solutions are compatible with the Pax system, as it is modular and flexible, making individual customization easier.

I understand this concern very well. If you want to use the Pax as a shoe cabinet, I strongly recommend:

- Avoid using only shelves; include pull-out drawers or baskets as well. This makes access easier, especially if the cabinet is deep.
- Consider getting special shoe drawers (for example, the Pax width works well with drawers about 30cm (12 inches) high) and combine them with narrow shelves that you can position individually.
- Use the upper levels with extra height clearance for tall shoes.
- Another option is to attach vertical shoe hangers or pockets to the inside of the doors to create additional storage space.
- Remember to sort through your shoes regularly – this keeps the organization clear and easy to maintain.

It also helps to sort shoes by season, which improves organization and convenience.
