Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA METOD kitchen cabinet system and now face the problem that the doors rattle when opening and closing. I want to mount the doors so that they fit securely and operate quietly. The hinges are the original METOD hinges, but despite the factory settings, all the doors are slightly loose and cause noise, especially when the door is gently nudged or closed quickly.

My question to you: What methods or tips do you know to fix METOD doors so they don’t rattle? Are there specific adjustment aids, dampers, or tricks to fine-tune the hinges? Maybe someone also has experience with additional accessories for noise reduction?

I would appreciate any help, as I want to get the kitchen to operate as quietly and professionally as possible. Thanks in advance!

Hello Mojako, your issue with the rattling METOD doors is actually quite common. I’m happy to help because the hinges do have several adjustment options that are often underused.

The original hinges can be adjusted in three directions:
- Height adjustment (up/down) to align the door with the cabinet front
- Side adjustment (right/left) to bring the door flush with the adjacent fronts
- Depth adjustment (inward/outward) to optimize the door’s closing position and fit

The depth adjustment is especially important to prevent rattling. If the door doesn’t sit firmly enough, it can vibrate and cause noise when moving. Try tightening the screw for the depth adjustment so the door fits as snugly as possible without binding.

Additionally, there are small rubber buffers (often called “dampers”) available for METOD door hinges that you can retrofit. They help make closing smoother and quieter. If these dampers are missing, you can order them separately from hardware stores or IKEA.

Finally, check whether the hinges are mounted correctly—sometimes slight misalignment of the door or incorrectly installed hinges can cause rattling. It’s also important that the screws on both the cabinet side and the door frame are tightened securely.

If you like, I can give you some tips on how to adjust the hinges step by step.

That is absolutely correct, and I would like to explain it in more detail to provide a complete picture:

First, it is crucial to systematically adjust the METOD hinges and keep a few important points in mind:

- Use door dampers: If not already installed, add them! IKEA offers so-called "soft close" dampers that are easy to mount and gently slow the door when closing. This greatly reduces rattling.

- Check the hinge depth adjustment: With a small Phillips screwdriver, you can adjust the depth screw (hidden behind the hinge) so that the door fits perfectly against the cabinet carcass. Be careful not to overtighten the screw, as this can wear out the material or cause it to jam.

- Inspect the hinge screws: The connection between the cabinet and the door should be play-free. Loose screws cause rattling movements. Sometimes it is worth securing the screws with a small drop of adhesive (e.g., medium-strength threadlocker) if parts tend to become loose repeatedly.

- Alternative damper inserts: For example, silicone buffers can be glued inside on the door or the cabinet carcass. These prevent hard metal or wood surfaces from directly hitting each other. A simple but effective noise protection.

- General assembly accuracy: Make sure your cabinet carcasses are perfectly square and level, otherwise even the best hinge adjustment will not fully help. You can check the alignment with a spirit level and a protractor.

You mentioned that the doors rattle even with a slight push. This might indicate too much play between the door and the cabinet or faulty fastening. Do you have experience installing the hinges on the cabinet carcass? Are the included mounting plates correctly positioned? Some users install them upside down, resulting in play.

If you like, please describe in more detail how you installed the doors, which screws you used, and whether the dampers are installed. I can then address each aspect more precisely.

Simply adjust the depth setting of the hinges correctly and attach the dampers. Tighten any loose screws. This is usually enough to eliminate the rattling.

That’s exactly what I mean. I once had a similar case where the mounting plate for the hinge wasn’t perfectly flush with the frame – small irregularities caused this exact problem. My advice: if you haven’t done so yet, remove the door, check that the mounting plate on the frame is securely fixed and sits evenly, and clean the area from wood chips or glue residue.

Alternatively, you can stick small, thin strips of foam rubber at the contact points if adjusting alone doesn’t solve the issue. This is a practical solution I have tested successfully myself.

Good luck with the testing!
