Hello everyone, I recently noticed that the side panels of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet are installed crookedly. Specifically, one side is slightly leaning outward, which causes the doors and drawers not to close properly. I have already checked that the floor is level and that all screws are tightened correctly, but the gap remains. My question is: What exactly can I do if the side panels of an Ikea Metod cabinet are crooked? Has anyone had experience with adjusting them or any helpful tips on how to straighten the side panels? I would appreciate a detailed response.

It’s really frustrating when the sidewalls are crooked because it just throws everything off and you don’t really know where to start. I once had a similar problem with a Metod cabinet, where it turned out the back panel wasn’t fitted properly, which caused the sides to warp a bit. Maybe try loosening the back panel and realigning it? I know it’s annoying, but sometimes that’s exactly where the problem is. The important thing is to take your time – rushing usually doesn’t help.

First, detach the side panels from the floor and the back panel, then check the alignment using a spirit level. After that, reattach the back panel, ensuring it fits properly all around. If necessary, use thin shims or wooden strips to level the gap between the wall and the cabinet.

I’m wondering how exactly the cabinet was assembled. Was the assembly manual followed precisely, or were there any deviations? Often, misaligned side panels indicate that assembling in the wrong order causes stress in the structure. From an objective standpoint: without detailed documentation of the assembly process, it is difficult to determine whether the issue is due to the material, the assembly, or the subfloor. Have you checked if the floor’s levelness was verified using a spirit level? This is the only way to identify a clear cause.

The assembly was done exactly according to the instructions from Ikea. I also checked several times, especially using a spirit level. The floor beneath the cabinet is completely level. The problem only occurs with the side panel, which is slightly out of plumb. I haven't addressed the back panel yet; I could still try that, but I fear the issue might be deeper than just an incorrect position. Do you think the material could be warped?

Material warping is rather rare with Ikea Metod cabinets but not impossible. Prolonged exposure to moisture or improper storage can affect the panels. My recommendation:

- Completely remove the back panel and check whether it lies flat.
- Slightly unscrew the side panels and realign them.
- Use a spirit level and, if available, a laser level to check the alignment.
- If the panels are visibly warped, you can try to correct them with gentle pressure or use small wooden wedges at the bottom area to help.

Always proceed with caution to avoid any cracking. Another tip: Do not tighten the screws too much, as this can cause tension and warping.
