ᐅ Experiences with moisture-resistant paint on old KALLAX units?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to renovate my old KALLAX shelves for use in a damp room by applying moisture-resistant paint. Since the KALLAX units are made of particleboard, I am concerned about long-term durability and protection against moisture, as high humidity in bathrooms or kitchens can quickly cause damage such as swelling.

I am especially interested in whether anyone has experience applying moisture-resistant paint directly to the unfinished KALLAX panels. How well does the paint adhere? Are there any special preparation steps needed before painting to prevent the particleboard from swelling? And how durable is the paint in everyday use— for example, against splashes or cleaning agents?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

This clearly shows that particle boards are not suitable for wet rooms, even if they are coated. It is better to use waterproof materials from the start – this saves trouble.

Why take the detour through unreliable protection when there are better products available right from the start?

Connor raised an important point, but I would like to question whether KALLAX should really be dismissed as unsuitable in general.

In my opinion, there is often a lack of nuanced consideration regarding usage and environment. Not every wet room experiences the same level of exposure. Ontoben describes an environment with steam and splash water, but without direct water contact.

The question is: Is a high-quality moisture-resistant paint, applied with proper preparation, sufficient to provide adequate protection in such cases?

I would like to hear more user experiences from those with similar conditions before particleboard is completely ruled out. How long did the paint finish last in your cases?

That would be really helpful. I don’t want to modify the KALLAX shelf for heavy-duty areas, but rather for its intended use on slightly damp walls.

If anyone has more detailed advice on preparation, possibly recommendations for a specific moisture-resistant paint or tips on sanding between coats, that would be great.

Also, how have you dealt with odor and drying times? I want to avoid the paint having a strong smell for too long, since it’s a bathroom in regular use.

Thanks in advance to everyone!
