Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes furniture piece and would like to modify its surface to better suit my room design. My question is: What are the best methods to alter or visually enhance the surface of BRIMNES (e.g., doors, drawer fronts, side panels)? I am especially interested in techniques like painting, applying adhesive foil, or possibly replacing the fronts. Are there any specific considerations regarding the material that I should keep in mind to achieve a durable and good-quality result? I prefer not to use expensive specialty materials, but rather to get creative on my own with simple methods. I would appreciate any tips, advice on preparation, or products that work well.

I would recommend lightly sanding the surface first to help paint or film adhere better. After that, you can paint with simple acrylic or synthetic resin paint. Film also works well, as long as the surface is clean and free of grease.

I’m happy to give you a brief guide on how to effectively change the surface of the Ikea BRIMNES:

- First, thoroughly clean the furniture to remove dust and grease.
- After cleaning, I recommend lightly sanding the smooth surface with sandpaper (grit 180-220). This improves adhesion for paint or film.
- If you want to paint, ideally use a primer designed for melamine or plastic surfaces.
- Then apply at least two thin coats of paint for an even finish.
- For applying film, it’s important to use a high-quality film and apply it bubble-free with a squeegee.
- Replacing the fronts is usually only possible if replacement parts are available from Ikea; this varies depending on the model.

Common mistakes to avoid: sanding too aggressively, applying paint too thickly, or painting over dirty surfaces.

If you like, I can also recommend which products work particularly well for BRIMNES.

Yes, please! I would appreciate specific product recommendations and where to buy them. I'm especially interested in which primers or base coats are suitable for the plastic coating, as well as paint types that look good on the matte, smooth surface. An assessment of durability for use in kitchen or bathroom furniture would also be very helpful.

Regarding priming: For most Ikea furniture with melamine coating, a bonding primer based on nitrocellulose or acrylic is recommended. This significantly improves the adhesion of the topcoat.

When painting, you should use solvent-based synthetic resin paints or special furniture paints designed for plastics to achieve durable results.

For covering surfaces, self-adhesive PVC foil with strong adhesive power, designed for furniture surfaces, is suitable. It is durable and water-resistant, making it ideal for kitchen environments as well.

For durability: Painted surfaces must be sealed with clear coat to prevent chipping. The foil should be cleaned regularly but is resistant to moisture.

I recently upgraded my BRIMNES with wood-look adhesive film – it looks really great and immediately makes a big difference! 😉

Tip: It’s important to make sure the surfaces are completely dust-free, otherwise you might get small bubbles afterwards.

And one more thing: Let it dry well in the air after applying the film before using the furniture again. This gives an IKEA classic the real wow factor!
