Hello everyone, I am currently planning to design a small kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets in the most space-efficient way and have encountered some challenges. My kitchen measures only about 2.5 x 3 meters (8.2 x 9.8 feet), with sloping walls on one side and limited space for countertops and storage. Therefore, I would like to know: How can I install IKEA Metod cabinets to make the best use of the available space, especially regarding the layout, cabinet configuration, corner utilization, and appliance integration? I am also interested in tips for avoiding unnecessary gaps or wasted space. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to maximize usable area and functionality in small kitchens using the Metod system? I look forward to detailed suggestions or advice on common mistakes to avoid during installation.

It’s best to use corner cabinets with carousel (lazy Susan) pull-outs to fully utilize corner spaces. For wall cabinets, install them up to the ceiling without leaving a gap. Countertops are ideally paired with drawers beneath rather than doors, as this provides more storage space and better organization. Place appliances, especially the built-in oven and dishwasher, next to each other with a cabinet in between for added stability.

Hello Etritjon, I would like to share some tips that can help you save space when assembling the IKEA Metod cabinets in a small kitchen. I will divide my response into three sections:

1. Space Planning and Cabinet Layout
- Start by measuring your kitchen accurately and create a scaled drawing.
- Use particularly narrow tall cabinets (40 cm (16 inches) wide) for small niches.
- Use the Metod series dimensions: 60 cm (24 inches) wide is standard, but combining with 20 cm (8 inches) and 40 cm (16 inches) wide units offers great flexibility.

2. Efficient Use of Corners
- Corner cabinets with a carousel or Magic Corner are essential; otherwise, corners become wasted storage space.
- Alternatively, choose corner cabinets with well-designed shelves that fully utilize the available width.

3. Maximizing Your Storage Space
- Avoid cabinet doors in base units; opt for drawers instead. They provide better visibility and storage capacity.
- Wall cabinets should ideally extend up to the ceiling, as gaps above collect dust and take up unnecessary space.
- In very small kitchens, open shelves for frequently used items are worth considering.

A common mistake is mixing too many different cabinet widths. This complicates planning and can lead to unnecessary gaps. It’s better to use a combination of 40 cm (16 inches) and 60 cm (24 inches) widths for precise adjustments.

I hope this helps! If you have exact measurements of your kitchen, I can provide more specific suggestions.

I agree with that. At first, I was also worried that these systems might be complicated, but they actually help a lot in small kitchens.

That’s very good advice, which helped me as well. Especially in small kitchens, you want to keep things organized, and drawers are invaluable for that. I was initially concerned about installation, but everything fits together well.

Etritjon, here’s a small tip from my own experience: try to install Metod cabinets so that individual units can be replaced later without much effort. In small kitchens, needs often change over time, and you’ll want to stay flexible. Also, it’s always worth paying close attention to measurements and door swing clearances beforehand to avoid any clashes with walls or appliances. I know it sounds basic, but these small mistakes can cause a lot of trouble.
