Hello everyone, I am planning to mount several Billy shelves from IKEA onto my drywall because I don’t have any load-bearing walls and want to install the shelves neatly and securely. My drywall typically consists of double-layer plasterboard, meaning two layers of gypsum boards on a wooden or metal frame.

I am mainly interested in which types of fasteners (e.g., specific kinds of anchors) are best suited to safely support the weight of the shelves along with their load, without damaging the wall or causing instability.

Additionally, I wonder if it is advisable to fix the shelves with an extra wall bracket or similar to reduce the risk of tipping. Are there any special tips or proven methods for different wall constructions, such as wooden studs versus metal profiles behind the drywall?

I look forward to helpful and detailed answers, thanks in advance!

It is best to use special cavity anchors, such as metal toggle bolts or snap toggles. These distribute the load well behind the drywall. Additionally, secure the shelves to the wall with appropriate angle brackets for added stability.

Great that you’re bringing up this topic here! 🙂 I attached my Billy shelves to drywall using metal toggle anchors, and they hold rock solid! Investing in good anchors is totally worth it, especially if you plan to load the shelves heavily. Don’t worry too much—with the right technique, everything will be secure. Good luck with the assembly! :-)

The most important factor is whether you can secure the screws into the framework behind the drywall. Ideally, you should always screw into wooden or metal studs, as these can bear significantly more load. If that’s not possible, I would recommend using metal toggle anchors, which distribute the pressure over a larger surface area.

Additionally, I suggest supporting the shelves with wall brackets, especially for taller or wider shelves, to prevent tipping. Also, make sure not to use screws that are too long, as they could damage the drywall panels.

To address your question as thoroughly as possible, I would like to explain some important details that are often overlooked but crucial for a safe installation.

First: The load-bearing capacity of the drywall depends heavily on the underlying structure. In cases where wooden or metal studs are directly behind the surface, it is ideal to position the anchors so that the screws are anchored into these studs. To do this, you need to accurately locate the studs using a stud finder or detection device.

If this is not possible, special hollow wall anchors such as metal toggle bolts or expansion anchors are the best choice. Metal toggle bolts open behind the drywall and distribute the load well. When selecting anchors, make sure the anchor length matches the drywall thickness. I recommend keeping a distance of at least 10cm (4 inches) from the stud edge to avoid deformation when tightening the screw.

When mounting the Billy shelves themselves, note that their upper back side usually does not have large rows of holes for fastenings. Therefore, install additional metal brackets that you attach with the anchors. These brackets should be firmly connected to both the shelf and the wall to ensure stability against tipping.

Tipping risk mainly occurs when the shelf is tall and narrow or heavily loaded on one side. Therefore, at least two fastening points per shelf at the top should be used. I also strongly advise against hanging the shelves solely on drywall; in any case, seek sturdy supports on the underlying structure or add additional studs if you are building the frame yourself.

Finally, before installation, it is advisable to check any uneven areas of the wall (e.g., older repairs, moisture damage) — the load-bearing capacity is significantly reduced in these spots.

If you have any questions about the types of anchors, screws, or tools used, feel free to ask!

Palenar’s post addresses the key points precisely. I would like to add that with double-layer drywall, the effective board thickness should be sufficient to properly hold metal toggle anchors, provided the anchors engage in the middle layer.

For sizing, I recommend anchors rated for at least 20 to 30 kg (44 to 66 lbs) load per fixing point, especially if the shelf will be fully loaded. The load direction should also take into account the pull direction of the screws—problems often arise from shear forces due to tilting.

It is also essential to ensure that all installation tools, such as drills, screwdrivers, and anchors, are compatible to avoid material damage.

For multiple shelves, the spacing between fixing points should be checked, since gypsum boards (drywall) typically cannot reliably distribute heavier loads if the spacing exceeds about 40 cm (16 inches).

Please also follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the anchors carefully, as the official load ratings considering wall thickness are crucial.
