Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy bookcase from Ikea and am now wondering how long such a piece of furniture usually lasts before serious issues occur, such as warping, broken shelves, or stability problems.

I am especially interested in practical experience, for example, how often these shelves get damaged under normal use (books, decorations, occasional rearranging).
Additionally, it would be helpful to know which factors—like room climate, the weight of stored items, or perhaps assembly quality—are particularly important for the lifespan.

Are there common weak points in Billy bookcases that should be considered to prevent problems?

The lifespan of a BILLY shelf depends strongly on several factors. Basically, the shelves are made of particleboard and, under normal load and proper assembly, last about 10 years before significant signs of wear or functional limitations occur.

The most important factor is the weight of the stored items. Excessive loading of the shelves can cause sagging or even breakage. With a recommended load capacity of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf, caution is advised.

The indoor climate is also relevant: high humidity can cause the particleboard to swell, which impairs stability.

Yes, often shelves can be replaced or supported with additional metal brackets, which increases load capacity. Suitable accessories are available online. The shelves become even more stable when relatively thin wooden strips are placed underneath as support, though the appearance should be considered.

In general: additional reinforcement is especially worthwhile for heavy loads.

I totally agree! 🙂

A few years ago, I upgraded my BILLY shelf with some simple tricks: I added a few metal brackets on the inside, which aren’t visible, but give the whole unit much better support.

To prevent the shelves from sagging, I screwed thin slats underneath. It works great, isn’t visible from the outside, and basically makes the shelf indestructible.

I also make sure not to place it directly in damp areas or near heaters – this helps extend its lifespan.

So: A little care and handiwork really pay off! ;-)
