moondoHello everyone,
I recently decided to install an IKEA Platsa furniture set in the bathroom because it seems very flexible and the design fits well. However, I am concerned about the moisture that accumulates in the bathroom from showering and cooking. My question is: How can I best protect IKEA Platsa furniture from moisture in the bathroom to prevent warping, swelling, or even mold growth? Are there any special protective measures like sealants, specific installation methods, or practical tips that you can recommend based on your own experience? I have seen that Platsa uses durable materials but is not specifically designed for bathroom use. Therefore, I am especially interested in which additional measures are truly effective without having to discard the furniture if it gets wet.
I look forward to your advice and experiences!

Hi moondo,
I completely understand how frustrating that can be! Especially when you use furniture in a room that it’s not really designed for. Your question about how to best protect IKEA PLATSA furniture from moisture in the bathroom is very important—I had almost the exact same issue myself.
What worked well for me was not mounting the furniture directly against the wall, but leaving a small gap so that air can circulate. I also covered the back panel with a waterproof protective film.
Avoiding standing moisture was the key point. If water splashes or the air is humid, it must not be able to penetrate the components. So I also treated the inside of the cabinets with wood varnish. This way, the varnish helps repel moisture better.
However, I’m a bit worried that it might never be perfectly protected and moisture could cause damage eventually. Therefore, I would recommend regular ventilation, and after showering, opening a window briefly or turning on the exhaust fan.
Hopefully these tips help you. Looking forward to more advice from others!

Hello moondo,
your question about how to protect IKEA PLATSA furniture from moisture in the bathroom is very specific and deserves a detailed look, especially since PLATSA is not designed as bathroom furniture.
First of all, PLATSA is mainly made of particleboard with melamine or foil coating, which can reach their limits in humid environments – swelling and delamination are possible consequences. Therefore, it is important to particularly protect the sensitive edges and inner surfaces.
- Before assembly, make sure all cut edges are carefully sealed with water-repellent edge banding (or special edge strips), as these are the most vulnerable points.
- I also recommend lining the back panel of your PLATSA cabinet with an additional plastic sheet or protecting it with a silicone-free sealant to repel splashing water directly.
- The furniture should be assembled so that it does not stand directly on the floor, where moisture levels are highest. Either install a baseboard or use small adjustable feet to maintain proper clearance.
- You can treat the interior surfaces of the furniture with a breathable wood protective oil – this provides lasting protection and adds some water-repellent properties to the material.
Last but not least, make sure your bathroom is well ventilated: ideally mechanical ventilation or at least regular airing out by opening windows briefly to quickly remove moisture.
To keep it short: you won’t achieve full protection with PLATSA, but these measures can significantly extend the lifespan of your furniture. Alternatively, you could choose furniture made with water-resistant boards or solid wood if your bathroom is very humid.
May I ask how your bathroom is set up exactly? For example, is there a shower enclosure directly next to the furniture and what kind of ventilation do you have? This will help to better address your situation.

Additionally:
- Seal edges with waterproof paint or edge protectors
- Waterproof backing panels, for example with PVC or water-repellent foil
- Ensure regular ventilation
These three steps effectively help prevent moisture damage.
