I have several Hemnes furniture pieces from IKEA at home, which I generally like very much. However, I am currently looking for ways to protect these furniture items from heat exposure, as they are located in a room that gets very warm in the summer and occasionally receives direct sunlight on the furniture.
My specific question is: How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be protected from heat without damaging the surface or altering their characteristic appearance? I am thinking of targeted measures that are easy to implement and can prevent warping, discoloration, or other heat-related damage.
Are there any experiences with heat protection films, special coatings, or other protection methods that I should consider? I look forward to your expert advice and any recommendations based on your own experience.

The Hemnes series is made from solid wood, mostly pine, which has been whitewashed or painted. From a physical standpoint, wood expands when exposed to heat and may show deformation or surface damage if exposed to prolonged and intense heat.
To effectively protect the furniture, the following multi-step approach is recommended:
- Reduce direct sunlight exposure using internal blinds, curtains, or external sun shading systems
- Install UV and heat protection films on windows, which can filter up to 80% of thermal radiation
- Use climate control with humidifiers, cooling, and ventilation to avoid temperature spikes
- Avoid placing heat sources nearby, such as radiators or lamps that emit high levels of heat
Post-treatment of the surface with heat-resistant coatings is technically possible but not recommended by IKEA, as these may alter the appearance. If you choose to proceed, be sure to test on an inconspicuous area first.

Why does Hemnes absolutely have to be protected just because it gets warm sometimes? The furniture is sturdy enough for the living room.
And applying a coating out of fear of heat seems a bit exaggerated. The furniture is designed for everyday use, not for the desert.
Oh, I love my Hemnes furniture and often worry about the heat during summer! 🤗
What works really well for me are light curtains that block the sunlight, and I also always use a houseplant in front of the window – it provides shade and helps keep the air a bit cooler!
Additionally, I have thin, clean fabric covers that I place on the furniture in the evenings – this protects them from heat and dust. I highly recommend this to everyone! It doesn’t cost much and makes a big difference! 🌿
