Hello everyone,

I have a Malm bed frame from IKEA, which I really like because of its minimalist design. However, for some time now, I’ve found it uncomfortable to lie on, mainly because the slatted base support is quite hard and the entire frame doesn’t allow for much flexibility or cushioning. My question is: How can I modify Malm bed frames to improve comfort? Are there any proven tips or DIY guides for enhancing the support of the slatted base, adding padding, or improving stability without significantly changing the look? I don’t just want to buy a new slatted base, but rather upgrade the existing bed to make it more comfortable and durable. Maybe you also have suggestions for materials, tools, or small parts that work especially well for this. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

for added comfort on your Malm bed frame, you can simply place foam padding between the frame and the slatted bed base. Alternatively, rubber buffers work well to provide some suspension for the base. Make sure they adhere well to prevent any slipping.

That’s true, but I recommend going a bit further with Malm beds: The slatted base support on Malm beds is often not very flexible as standard. I have had good experiences when not only adding damping material, but also mounting the actual slatted base on spacers combined on the sides with rubber or soft plastic. This creates better suspension.

The trick is to separate the load distribution and the spring core to make the lying feel softer. If you are handy, you can use small wooden blocks or thick U-shaped brackets to slightly raise and gently cushion the base. Choose a medium-density foam that is not too soft but sufficiently elastic (e.g., cold foam), and attach it carefully. The screw positioning is also important to avoid any wobbling.

What type of mattress and slatted base are you using? Depending on that, the adjustment can be optimized.

Wow, this topic really interests me too! 🙂 The design of the Malm bed frame is super clean, but comfort isn’t always ideal – totally understandable. I once tried enhancing the slatted bed base support with narrow rubber strips – it creates a slightly springy effect. For a real comfort boost, you might also try placing memory foam pads underneath; it feels almost like sleeping on a cloud without warping the bed. But please tell me, how do you usually sleep? On your back, side, or stomach? That would be important for precise optimization 😉

Thanks for asking! I mostly sleep on my side, sometimes on my back. Sleeping on my stomach is quite rare. The mattress is a medium-firm cold foam mattress, which is generally fine, but combined with the rigid frame, it lacks the comfortable give I expect from a good bed.

My slatted frame is a basic roll-up type made of wooden slats, nothing special. I imagine the slats aren’t as springy as would be ideal for me. Maybe there’s room to improve the frame itself?

Hello,

If you want to modify the Malm bed frame to improve sleeping comfort, a combination of adjustments to the slatted base and the use of more flexible supports is recommended.

1. Slatted base: A more springy and higher-quality slatted base with adjustable firmness levels per zone can significantly enhance comfort, especially for side sleepers who need some give in the shoulder and pelvic areas.
2. Pads and cushioning: Silicone or PU dampers (small pads between the slatted base and frame) absorb vibrations and minimize rattling.
3. Frame modification: If you have DIY skills, you can install small spring steel plates or dampers inside the inner frame to create a softer basic feel.
4. Material quality: Slightly elastic materials such as cold foam or latex used as an additional layer improve the sleeping experience without major alterations.

Small tip: Make sure that no modification compromises the stability of the bed, as the Malm design is very much focused on sturdiness.
