Hello everyone,
I have a Malm bed frame from IKEA, which I really like because of its minimalist design. However, for some time now, I’ve found it uncomfortable to lie on, mainly because the slatted base support is quite hard and the entire frame doesn’t allow for much flexibility or cushioning. My question is: How can I modify Malm bed frames to improve comfort? Are there any proven tips or DIY guides for enhancing the support of the slatted base, adding padding, or improving stability without significantly changing the look? I don’t just want to buy a new slatted base, but rather upgrade the existing bed to make it more comfortable and durable. Maybe you also have suggestions for materials, tools, or small parts that work especially well for this. Thanks in advance!

This is brilliant, how you’re exchanging ideas here! I love it when technical details are combined with practical experience 🙂
In addition to the slatted frame and foam pads, I also stretched flexible straps from the head to the foot end within the frame. This adds more flexibility and prevents the slats from resting fully on the frame, which often leads to firmness. It also makes the system even more springy.
Try to see if you can install a construction like this without making the frame unstable – normally it works great with Malm. Good luck, and feel free to share your experiences!
