Hello everyone, I recently got an IKEA Malm bed and noticed that it’s quite noisy when I move or lie on it. It squeaks and creaks in various places, which really disturbs my sleep. The bed frame is supported by a wide slatted base that isn’t brand new either. I’ve already tried tightening the screws, but the problem persists. Does anyone have tips on how to effectively eliminate this squeaking? Are there any special tricks or products you would recommend without having to take the whole bed apart or buy a new one? Many thanks in advance!

Should I completely disassemble the bed and retighten everything, or is it enough to just tighten all the screws?I would say this is often the key point! Especially with Malm beds, it really helps to first loosen everything briefly and then tighten it firmly again. You can think of it like a new pair of shoes: first loosely tied, then pulled tight. If you just tighten the bed without loosening first, the tension doesn’t distribute evenly. And yes, the slats can definitely have an effect because they can put the bed frame under slight tension or compression. So first, tighten everything properly – this often completely eliminates any squeaking. And if there’s still a noise, then a bit of lubricant, as I recommended above, usually helps 🙂

Could it be that small adjustments to the slatted frame increase the overall tension in the bed frame? That is correct. If the slatted frame does not fit precisely or is damaged, the bed frame may be unevenly stressed. This can cause deformations that create friction points, resulting in creaking noises. It is advisable to completely disassemble and reassemble the frame after thoroughly inspecting all components to ensure the load is evenly distributed. Additionally, the bed’s feet should be placed on a level surface to minimize unnecessary movement.
Hey, it’s great to see such specific tips being shared here! 🙂 I’ve also regularly checked my Malm bed and tightened any loose screws. For me, felt pads at the contact points worked really well to eliminate the annoying squeaking. Just stick a bit of felt under the wooden joints – give it a try!
I would proceed with the following steps: 1. Loosen all screws, 2. Apply felt or rubber strips to the contact surfaces, 3. Tighten everything back. This method effectively reduces movement noise, especially with wooden frames. Check the slatted frame and replace it if it is damaged.
It’s interesting how much effort everyone puts in just to keep this pine bed quiet. But honestly – squeaky furniture is somehow part of the charm of your own home, isn’t it? 😉 Jokes aside, I think the fuss about squeaking is a bit overrated. If you really want peace and quiet, it might be better to invest in a different bed, such as a metal frame or a box spring bed. Then you wouldn’t have this problem in the first place. A wooden frame with a slatted base is always prone to creaking; that’s normal.
