Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA and have noticed that it seems to attract dust almost like a magnet. This effect appears to be especially strong in the open compartments. I suspect static electricity plays a role, causing dust particles to be attracted. Does anyone else experience this issue? Are there effective antistatic solutions or tips for keeping the shelf dust-free without having to clean it constantly? I would appreciate well-informed advice, particularly regarding products or methods that have proven effective for plastic furniture. Thanks!

Jokes aside, if the shelf is gathering dust, a little “discharge” can help – I use anti-static lint sprays that are commonly used for laundry. Just spray lightly on the shelf (not too wet), and it eliminates the static effect.
And of course, make sure to dust regularly, otherwise it won’t help.
One more tip: place a small indoor plant nearby; they increase humidity and create a more natural atmosphere – plus, green decoration is always a bonus 😉

anti-static lint sprays, like those used for laundry dryingI’m not sure – these products smell very chemical, and honestly, I doubt they are healthy for furniture in the long run. They might actually cause the surface to become sticky, attracting even more dust. Instead, I would recommend vegan beeswax balm or special furniture polish without silicones.
And honestly, who cleans their Kallax shelves often enough to be spraying constantly? Maybe the real issue is the expectation that there should be no dust at all. Let’s be honest, dust is part of life, even on shelves 😉 If you don’t want any, closed cabinets are the way to go.

And yes, a plant is also a good remedy. Without my aloe vera and fern, I would probably already have dust on my face 🙂
On the topic of static electricity: I read that you can wipe the shelf with a rubber glove – that is supposed to dissipate charges. Maybe someone wants to give it a try?
