Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while and hope to get some helpful advice here in the forum: How can I securely stabilize my IKEA Billy bookcases on a carpeted floor?

The problem is that the bookcases feel a bit unstable on the carpet, probably due to the soft surface. I have already tried to anchor them to the wall using the provided wall mounts, but because of the carpet, I can’t find a truly stable solution. Are there any proven methods to securely fix the feet of the bookcases or generally improve their stability without damaging the carpet?

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hey jansin, that’s a great question! I had the exact same issue with my BILLY shelves on carpet. 🙂

My advice would be to place small sturdy wooden boards or thicker MDF pieces under the shelf feet. This increases the contact area, so the shelf won’t wobble as easily. Important: The boards should be large enough to distribute the weight well, but of course not extend beyond the carpet edge, as that could create a tripping hazard!

And if you want, you can combine this with anti-slip pads for extra grip.

It’s amazing how something so simple can improve stability that much! :-)

Hello jansin, I can gladly give you some basic tips on how to stabilize your BILLY shelves on carpeted floors.

First: Wall fastening is really important, even if the carpet makes the anchor softer – a screw into the wall with an appropriate anchor still provides good stability.

Second: As NUPIN already mentioned, a solid base under the feet significantly improves stability. Wood or plastic boards work very well. Make sure these bases are level and non-slip.

Third: You can also slightly adjust the feet of the BILLY shelves by installing furniture feet with screw threads, allowing you to perfectly set the height and stability.

I hope this helps for now!

That's exactly how I do it, and it works great. I cut small, square wooden pieces specifically to go under each foot – it’s almost like a mini collection of pedestals under the shelves!

And don’t worry, it might look odd on carpet, but it’s not a problem in daily use. The furniture stands firmly, and you can safely load several heavy books without worrying about the shelf wobbling.

Regarding wall mounting: Even if the wall anchor screw isn’t 100% secure through the carpeted floor, it at least prevents tipping – so both together make the perfect combination 🙂

Wooden boards under the feet, don’t forget wall anchors, and rubber pads can be added for slippery carpet. This is sufficient in most cases.

Haha, exactly, why not add a bit of drama to ordinary furniture?

But seriously: I wonder how stable a BILLY shelf can be on a thick carpet when the structure is mainly made of thin particleboard.

Maybe it’s better to invest in a different shelving unit when you need a sturdy setup on carpet! Just a provocative thought... ;-)
