Hello everyone,
I have a specific question regarding the hinges on the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea: Who among you prefers to replace the hinges yourself using third-party or aftermarket parts instead of the original Ikea components? I’m especially interested in how you go about it, what experiences you’ve had with different quality or fit issues, and whether you think it’s worth switching to alternative products or better to stick with the original hinges.
I’ve noticed that the original hinges can become stiff over time with frequent use or even break, and the prices for replacement parts from Ikea are quite high. That’s why I’m considering sourcing suitable hinges myself and doing the replacement.
How has your experience been? Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

The doors are used quite frequently every day since I use the Kallax for folders and other office supplies. That naturally makes it important for the hinges to be really durable!
In my experience, you really can’t quickly fault the original parts for being poor quality. Although they are not the cheapest, I think they are definitely worth it. The hinges operate smoothly, are sturdy, and the doors close gently.
But if you feel like experimenting, I would definitely be interested to see how reproductions perform with daily use! Maybe you’ll find the best combination for yourself. Good luck! 🙂

Personally, I’ve already replaced my Kallax hinges twice myself with cheap replicas – and they’ve been holding up without any issues for months now. That gives me some confidence to try it myself. So I’ll probably start by getting a set of inexpensive replica models and test those first. If that’s not satisfactory, I’ll then go for the original parts.
One last question to the pros here: Is there a particular brand or manufacturer you would recommend when choosing replicas?
