Hello everyone,
I am planning to repaint my IKEA Platsa furniture but am unsure which type of paint is best suited for this. It is important to me that the paint adheres well, the surface remains as durable as possible, and that the furniture does not lose stability or get damaged after painting. Most of my Platsa units are made of particleboard with a melamine coating.
Does anyone have experience with specific types of paint, such as acrylic, enamel, or chalk paint? Also, are there any special preparations or primers that are absolutely necessary to achieve a satisfactory result? I want to avoid the paint peeling or becoming uneven.
Thanks in advance for your tips and advice!

Great idea to redesign the Platsa furniture yourself! 🙂 I’ve already painted mine and can say that a water-based acrylic paint works best. Lightly sand the furniture first (fine sandpaper works great), and then be sure to apply a primer.
This will ensure the paint adheres well and lasts a long time. Also, it’s best to choose a matte or satin finish paint—it looks really nice and is easy to maintain.
Go for it—it’s really not difficult!

Hello Ixlatan,
to answer your question in detail: For IKEA Platsa furniture with melamine coating, proper surface preparation is very important. Since these surfaces are generally very smooth and non-porous, paint has difficulty adhering without the right primer.
- First, lightly sand the surfaces with 220-grit sandpaper to slightly roughen the surface.
- Then, apply a special bonding primer designed for melamine-coated furniture.
- For the paint, I recommend water-based acrylic or synthetic resin paints because they are durable and resistant to abrasion.
Chalk paints are popular but tend to peel on smooth surfaces if the preparation is not done professionally.
If you have any further questions about the exact procedure, I’m happy to help.

Chalk paints look great, but they hardly hold up without a proper substrate. I once quickly treated my Platsa with chalk paint – it was really fun, but after a few months, there were already signs of wear. I then switched to acrylic.
So, if you want the look of chalk paint, go for a paint specifically made for furniture – it saves you frustration and headaches 😊
To provide a well-founded recommendation, I would like to address the material characteristics of IKEA Platsa furniture:
These are mainly made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which creates a smooth, non-porous surface. For painting, a primer specifically designed for melamine-coated furniture is recommended, such as an adhesion primer based on acrylic or synthetic resin.
The paints should be water-based and formulated for furniture, such as acrylic or synthetic resin paints. They are characterized by good adhesion, scratch resistance, and abrasion resistance. Before application, light sanding with fine sandpaper (grit around 220) is mandatory to ensure better adhesion.
A top coat with clear varnish is also advisable to provide additional surface protection.
For every painting process, drying times and application instructions from the manufacturer must be strictly followed.

Hello everyone,
I would like to revisit this topic with a more technical approach and add some details because the preparation is crucial for the final result when painting Platsa furniture.
1. Preparation:
- Thoroughly degrease the furniture parts (preferably with alcohol or a specialized cleaner) to avoid adhesion problems.
- Lightly sand the surface (grit 220-240) to slightly roughen it; otherwise, the paint will hardly adhere.
2. Primer:
- Use a special adhesion primer suitable for lacquered or melamine-coated surfaces, for example, an acrylic-based bonding primer.
- Apply an even coat, including edges and hidden areas, as paint tends to chip first in these spots.
3. Paint:
- Water-based acrylic or synthetic resin paints are best suited because they are durable and long-lasting.
- Paints with a high solid content provide better coverage and are more robust.
4. Finish:
- Finally, apply a protective clear coat (matte or satin finish).
One last question for you, Ixlatan: Which color are you planning to use? More classic white, or are you thinking of stronger shades? Your choice of color can also influence which type of paint is best.
