Hello everyone,

I am planning to repaint my IKEA Platsa furniture but am unsure which type of paint is best suited for this. It is important to me that the paint adheres well, the surface remains as durable as possible, and that the furniture does not lose stability or get damaged after painting. Most of my Platsa units are made of particleboard with a melamine coating.

Does anyone have experience with specific types of paint, such as acrylic, enamel, or chalk paint? Also, are there any special preparations or primers that are absolutely necessary to achieve a satisfactory result? I want to avoid the paint peeling or becoming uneven.

Thanks in advance for your tips and advice!

For painting IKEA Platsa furniture, I recommend:

- Lightly sanding beforehand
- Using a primer suitable for melamine
- Applying water-based acrylic paint in the desired color
- Using clear varnish for extra protection

This ensures good paint adhesion and a durable surface.

Light sanding (grit 220-240) to slightly roughen the surface; otherwise, the paint will barely adhere.

Exactly. Only mechanical roughening can ensure the adhesion effect of the primer and paint.

The paints should be water-based and designed for furniture, such as acrylic or synthetic resin paints.

I support this advice. Water-based acrylic paints are especially suitable for interior use because they have low emissions and are easy to apply.

Additionally, I want to add that besides choosing the right paint, the application temperature and humidity are also important when painting. Ideal conditions are about 18–22°C (64–72°F) and low humidity to avoid blistering and uneven drying.

My Platsa components are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine coating.

Therefore, the most important step before painting is preparation:

- Degrease the surface with suitable cleaners
- Lightly sand (around 220 grit)
- Use a high-quality primer

Water-based acrylic paint! Let the furniture be lightly sanded

I agree with that. Water-based acrylic paints are the best choice for this application because they provide good adhesion, durability, and a pleasant finish.

Additionally, a clear protective topcoat is recommended to protect the surface against scratches and wear.
