FusoniHello everyone, I am planning to install several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in our home and want to make the setup as child-friendly as possible. Specifically, I am interested in how to mount and equip the cabinets to ensure they are safe for young children and pose no risk of injury. This includes aspects such as avoiding sharp edges, secure attachment to the wall, childproof fittings, and possibly child-safe storage solutions. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on which additional parts or installation methods work especially well to make Metod cabinets child-friendly? I look forward to detailed and practical advice—preferably with examples of successful solutions in everyday use.
Hello Fusoni, this is a very important topic since IKEA Metod cabinet units alone are often not fully optimized for child safety. Here is a brief overview with practical steps to help you:
- Wall Anchoring: Always secure all wall cabinets and tall cabinets with appropriate wall brackets. This prevents tipping.
- Edge Protection: For sharp edges or corners, there are special plastic edge guards or rubber bumpers that can be attached.
- Handle Safety: There are either special handle covers or you can temporarily block handles with child safety locks.
- Interior Safety: Safety latches or child locks for cabinets are recommended if hazardous items are stored inside.
- Drawer Safety: To prevent finger injuries, you can use soft-close systems or attachments that prevent drawers from being fully pulled out.
It’s best to create a priority list depending on the age of your children and the type of cabinet. Feel free to ask if you need more details on any of these points.

Hello Fusoni, in addition to the previous posts, I would like to point out the importance of the cabinet height selection. If you want child-safe storage, hazardous items or cleaning supplies should be stored in higher cabinets. Additionally, cabinet doors can be equipped with magnetic or adhesive locks that make it harder for small hands to open but remain easy for adults to use.
I also recommend upgrading the hinges to soft-close if this has not been done yet. This significantly reduces the risk of fingers getting pinched.
And to not forget a practical test: check the stability after installation and try it out yourself to ensure everything is safe.

Thanks in advance for the helpful tips!
I have an important question: Are there any specific mounting materials or additional parts officially offered by IKEA or other suppliers that are particularly suitable for childproof assembly of the IKEA Metod cabinets? I’m thinking of items like attachable safety latches, edge protectors, or special handle covers designed specifically for the Metod series. Or would it be better to use universally available child safety devices?
I’m also interested in whether there are any special considerations during assembly to improve stability under child-related stress.
