Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased and assembled several IKEA Billy bookcases. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the surface is quite sensitive to scratches and minor scuffs, which become especially noticeable with frequent use or when moving the bookcases. Since Billy bookcases are often used for books, decorations, or in home offices, I would now like to focus on how to effectively prevent scratches on these shelves in the long term. Which materials, cleaning products, or protective measures are proven or recommended? Are there specific surface protection solutions or alternative methods that can help protect the wood or the laminate finish? Tips on handling the bookcases when moving them are also welcome, as this is often when ugly marks occur. I look forward to practical and concrete advice from you!

What specific use cases do you have in mind?
Good question, thanks. I mainly use the shelves for large collections of books of various sizes and weights. Some of the shelves are therefore heavily loaded. In addition, I have placed some decorative items and plants on them. Rearranging the shelves themselves happens rather rarely, but when it does, it can also happen occasionally, which is why a reliable safety measure makes sense here too.

A solution with a custom-sized acrylic sheet sounds interesting, but I wonder if it might alter the visual appearance too much. Has anyone here had experience with custom-made protective sheets for Billy shelves, and how does that work in daily use?

Does anyone have experience with custom-made protective panels for Billy shelves, and how do they perform in everyday use?

I installed transparent acrylic panels cut to size on my Billy shelves. It’s important to choose panels about 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches) thick so they are sturdy but not too visually dominant. The panels are easy to clean, offer excellent protection against scratches, and provide a slightly glossy protective layer that guards against moisture. Visually, it’s essential to ensure the edges are well finished to avoid any sharp or obvious edges.

If aesthetics are especially important, you can opt for panels with a subtle matte finish to reduce the glossy effect. In everyday use, however, you need to regularly check that no dust or dirt has accumulated between the panel and the shelf, as this could cause scratches. Cleaning underneath the panel with a microfiber cloth from time to time helps prevent this.

Good point! To add to that, regular cleaning with a mild soapy solution and soft cloths not only cares for the shelves but also for protective films or panels. Abrasion and scratches caused by dirt particles are the most common reasons for visible damage. If you keep this in mind and install the panels or films properly, you can enjoy the Billy shelves for a long time without any visual deterioration. Due to regular use, I would also recommend placing protective pads or bookends under heavy books to distribute point loads more gently.
