Hello everyone, some time ago I purchased and assembled several IKEA Billy bookcases. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the surface is quite sensitive to scratches and minor scuffs, which become especially noticeable with frequent use or when moving the bookcases. Since Billy bookcases are often used for books, decorations, or in home offices, I would now like to focus on how to effectively prevent scratches on these shelves in the long term. Which materials, cleaning products, or protective measures are proven or recommended? Are there specific surface protection solutions or alternative methods that can help protect the wood or the laminate finish? Tips on handling the bookcases when moving them are also welcome, as this is often when ugly marks occur. I look forward to practical and concrete advice from you!

To prevent scratches on Billy shelves, it is recommended to first apply felt pads to the shelves and the frame if the unit is placed on hard floors. This not only reduces wear when moving the furniture but also prevents scratches caused by dust particles. For the surface itself, regular gentle dusting with a microfiber cloth is advisable. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents that could damage the laminated surface or the paint layer. To protect against mechanical damage, a clear protective film, which is available commercially for furniture and can be cut to size, is suitable. Alternatively, thin acrylic or glass sheets can be placed on the shelves. It is important not to place heavy or sharp-edged items directly on the surface to prevent cuts.

It's great that you're starting a discussion like this! 🙂 I added self-adhesive felt pads to the contact points on my Billy shelves – ever since, I feel much more relaxed when rearranging things. Small rubber or fabric pads under decorations also help a lot. And very important: not only prevent scratches but also avoid mistakes during assembly. I once had minor damage because I overtightened the screws. So always work gently! 🙂

Not so fast with tightening the screws...
This raises an important point! Here is a brief guide on how to avoid mechanical scratches during assembly and use:

1. During assembly, tighten screws only enough to firmly connect all components without putting pressure on the surface.
2. To prevent scratches when moving items, disassemble shelves into individual parts if possible, or place protective mats underneath.
3. Apply transparent furniture edge protectors on especially exposed areas of the shelf, such as edges and corners.
4. Use protective pads or coasters on frequently used shelves.

Summary: Moderate handling combined with targeted additional protection on vulnerable areas effectively prevents scratches.

Buy felt pads and stick them to the floors. Never slide furniture across the floor; always lift it slightly. Do not place sharp objects directly on the shelves.

I am adding some technical details for long-term protection: The surface of the Billy shelves usually consists of a thin melamine resin coating on a particleboard core. This layer is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof. Excessive friction or sharp edges can cause damage that penetrates the protective layer and exposes the base material.

For prevention, I recommend:
- Cutting a thin, durable protective film (such as PET film) precisely to fit the surface dimensions and applying it carefully to avoid air bubbles.
- For an even more robust solution: use custom-cut acrylic or glass panels on the shelves.
- Additionally, when using the shelves, be careful not to overload them to the point where the film or coating could be damaged in specific spots.

What specific usage scenarios do you have in mind? Are heavy books or decorative items often placed on them, or do you frequently move the shelves around?
