I have a question regarding the adjustable shelf heights in the Ikea Pax systems: How can the height of individual compartments be made as flexible as possible to accommodate different needs? My goal is to maximize the available storage space and to easily store both tall and short items. Are there any proven methods or special accessories suitable for this purpose? Additionally, I am interested in whether shelf boards can be adjusted to intermediate heights without much effort, as I have not yet found clear solutions for this. I look forward to concrete tips and experiences!

Hey ixleo56, that’s a very practical question! The Pax shelving units are quite flexible already, but often we want more than just the standard spacing between the shelves. My tip: take a close look at the shelf supports – they have small holes inside the frame spaced about 3-5cm (1-2 inches) apart. This allows you to adjust the shelves at different heights.

What I personally do when I want even finer adjustment is to use thinner shelves made from lightweight wood placed on top of the regular shelves. This way, you can compensate for height differences when you need extra space for taller items. It might sound a bit improvised, but it works really well – basically a DIY upgrade for the Pax 😉

Oh, and if you are using doors: make sure the shelf heights are well coordinated with the door openings, otherwise the doors might rub or get stuck when closing.

Use shelf supports that fit into the pre-drilled holes. For intermediate sizes, you can use thinner shelves. Alternatively, there are also Pax extensions available at Ikea that can help.

Hello ixleo56,

I would like to add to your question because flexibility with PAX shelving is a major concern for many users. Basically, there are the classic shelf supports that allow you to adjust the shelves in increments of about 3 cm (1 inch) in height. This already provides good flexibility. It is important to consider the load limits before inserting the shelves, as thinner shelves can carry less weight.

In addition, you can use so-called intermediate shelves, which are lightweight additional elements. These can be bought or custom-made to compensate for small height differences.

Another option is drawer inserts or removable cabinet elements inside the PAX unit, turning compartments into smaller subsections. This significantly increases versatility.

In general, it makes sense to carefully plan your storage needs to place the shelves as efficiently as possible. If you like, please describe what you want to store, and we can then focus more specifically on the suitable shelf heights.

Hello ixleo56,

To make the height of Ikea Pax wardrobes truly flexible, it’s important to first understand the basic technical possibilities of the construction: The inner sides consist of rows of holes spaced 32 mm (standard spacing in furniture construction), into which shelf supports can be inserted. This spacing allows height adjustments in 32-mm (1.26-inch) increments, which is usually fine enough.

Step-by-step approach:
- Measure the storage requirements for each item very precisely, such as shoes, clothing, folders, etc.
- Choose shelves that match the desired height and ensure that the gap between the base and the door panel is at least about 2 cm (0.8 inches) to prevent rubbing.
- For intermediate heights smaller than the spacing (32 mm / 1.26 inches), I recommend using thin wooden panels or shelf system inserts. This way, even the smallest height differences can be compensated.

Technically, there are also special Pax components from Ikea, such as matching drawers, baskets, and interior organizers, which allow you to vertically structure the storage space without having to constantly drill or rebuild the shelves. Important: Always keep stability in mind, as additional shelves can also increase the load on the side panels.

Finally, a tip: For frequently changing shelf heights, use clamp or plug-in systems that do not require screw fasteners — this saves assembly time and protects the material.

This is the key point, and to achieve it effectively, I recommend a structured approach:

1. Assess your needs: Make a list of the items you want to store, including their approximate heights.
2. Sketch the wardrobe: Draw the Pax system on millimeter paper or use IKEA’s online planner.
3. Use the 32-mm (1.26-inch) system for setting shelf heights. If you need heights that don’t fit the standard increments, plan for additional thin intermediate shelves.
4. For tall items, open sections without shelves can also be practical.
5. Consider the maximum load capacity of the shelves – usually between 15 and 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs).

Common mistakes:
- Shelves placed too close together, preventing larger items from fitting.
- Not planning for door clearance.

My tip: IKEA also offers shelves in various thicknesses, which can be useful to add as intermediate layers in some cases.
