Hello everyone, I am currently planning to design my kitchen using Ikea Metod kitchen units and want to focus especially on ergonomics and space-saving solutions. My question is how to best plan and assemble the Metod units so that they are optimally aligned with ergonomic principles (e.g., working heights, movement paths, frequency of cabinet use) while also making the best possible use of the available space without making the kitchen feel cluttered. Are there proven planning approaches or experiences regarding which cabinet combinations work particularly well, which heights to choose, and how to maximize storage despite limited space? Hello! First of all, it’s great to see you taking ergonomics seriously—this isn’t something you see everywhere. 😊 My advice: Pay attention to the correct height of the worktops, which should be between 85 and 95 cm (33 and 37 inches) depending on your height, so you don’t have to keep bending your back. With Metod, you can combine different plinth heights and worktops.

When it comes to space, tall cabinets are real space-savers—you can fit a lot inside. My tip: Plan to have items you use frequently at eye level or just below; it makes everything much more convenient.

And here’s the trick—use drawers instead of hinged doors; they’re much more ergonomic and quicker to access! This way, you can set up your kitchen cabinets very space-efficiently without having to twist your fingers.

I am adding a brief but structured planning guide for Ikea Metod kitchen units:

- Measure your work height: Stand and measure your elbow height, then subtract about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches); this will be your optimal countertop height.
- Optimize workflow: Arrange workstations (sink, stove, refrigerator) in a triangle layout to minimize walking distances.
- Use storage efficiently: Choose tall base cabinets with drawers, and include corner units with carousel or Le Mans mechanisms.
- Organize drawers by frequency of use: Cutlery on top, pots and pans in the middle, infrequently used items below or in tall cabinets.

Common mistakes include: countertops being too low or too high, too many wall cabinets that overwhelm the space, or incorrect cabinet depths causing unusable corners.

Ikea’s planning software helps capture measurements accurately and position the modules correctly.

Very good post, harold. Additionally, I would recommend planning the Metod kitchen units as modular as possible, rather than always sticking to standard sizes. Ikea offers modular dimensions, allowing, for example, 20 cm (8 inches) wide cabinets to fill small gaps.

Ergonomics also depends heavily on proper lighting, especially under wall cabinets, to avoid shadows while working.

Well-planned accessories like internal drawers, drawer organization systems, or rail hooks create extra storage space without making the kitchen feel larger.

Hello everyone! While planning my Metod kitchen, I realized that it’s important to consider not only the basic functionality but also how you feel in the space – for me, ergonomics go hand in hand with comfort.

My advice is to allow enough room for movement, even in tight spaces, with at least 100 cm (39 inches) of clearance in front of the kitchen units. I underestimated how cramped it can feel when this is overlooked.

Additionally, I personally find soft-close drawers very helpful because they close more quietly and smoothly, reducing stress. This might be worth considering, especially for frequently used cabinets.
