ᐅ How can I stabilize BILLY shelves when they are placed on an uneven floor?

onbau4Hello everyone,
I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA in my home office, but the problem is that the floor there is uneven. Because of this, the shelves are not stable, they wobble slightly, and I am concerned they might get damaged over time or, in the worst case, tip over. My question to you is: How do you stabilize BILLY shelves when placed on an uneven floor?
I have already considered using small washers or self-adhesive spacers, but I am unsure about how durable and load-bearing such solutions are. Are there any specially recommended methods, products, or installation tips that make the shelf permanently safe and stable?
I look forward to your experiences or tips, even if the shelves only need to be adjusted by a minimal amount or by a few millimeters.

Hello onbau4,
In general, it is always recommended to secure BILLY shelves to the wall, as this greatly improves stability. However, this is not always enough if the floor is uneven and the shelf wobbles at both ends. Here are some steps I would suggest:
1. Measure the floor unevenness: Use a spirit level or a small straightedge to check how severe the unevenness is. If it’s just a few millimeters, it can often be fixed with appropriate leveling measures.
2. Use shims: Rubber wedges or furniture pads made of cork or plastic work well. You can place these under the feet to level the shelf. It is important that the material remains stable and does not compress over time.
3. Use adjustable furniture glides with screws: There are special furniture glides that can be screwed under the shelf feet. They have a threaded adjustment to fine-tune the height. This way, you can raise or lower each foot individually.
4. Check the frame structure: Sometimes the shelves are slightly warped. If possible, you can attach a narrow wooden strip crosswise at the bottom to stabilize the shelf as a whole.
5. Don’t forget wall fastening: The standard anti-tip brackets provided by IKEA serve well here. Even if the shelf is stable on its own, securing it to the wall prevents it from tipping over when loaded.
I’m curious how big the unevenness is in your case and whether you have already tried any measures?
I’m happy to provide more targeted tips if you can share more details.

Stabilizing BILLY shelves on uneven floors involves two steps: precise leveling of the base and secure wall anchoring.
First, the degree of unevenness should be accurately measured, for example, using a spirit level. To level the shelf feet, adjustable furniture glides are recommended, especially suitable for small height differences of a few millimeters. They provide a reliable, long-lasting solution.
Second, wall anchoring according to IKEA instructions is mandatory to prevent tipping. The supplied anti-tip fittings must be used with appropriate wall plugs. On uneven floors, wall anchoring additionally supports overall stability.
Relying solely on furniture pads should be avoided, as they can compress or shift over time. Therefore, products with height adjustment are preferable.

Here are some steps I would recommend:I agree and would like to add: if the unevenness is somewhat larger, clearly over 5 mm (0.2 inches), customized leveling shims or small angle brackets on the legs can be useful. These can be made from wood or plastic or purchased ready-made.
In addition, it can help to slightly reduce the load on the shelves and distribute the weight evenly to avoid point loads that cause tilting moments.
Finally, I recommend carefully checking the load capacity before purchasing new furniture glides – cheap plastic glides can sometimes be too weak and wear out quickly under heavy, fully loaded shelves.
If the shelves stand very unevenly, it would be worthwhile to check the floor – sometimes a localized floor repair with filler compound or thin impact sound insulation in specific areas can help.
