Hello everyone, I need your tips and experiences:

I want to retrofit the soft-close function on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors. The doors are already installed, but I didn’t choose the soft-close dampers when I bought them. Now I want to attach the soft-close fittings as easily and securely as possible without removing the doors completely. Are there any proven methods or practical tricks for retrofitting Ikea Metod doors with a soft-close function?

It’s important to me that not too many tools or special parts are needed and that the installation is fairly straightforward. If there are differences between models or versions, I am also interested in knowing what to watch out for regarding screws, spacers, or similar components.

Thanks in advance for your help!

That’s a good approach! Usually, you can retrofit the doors while they are still mounted if they can be easily unhinged.

My tip: Make sure to use the original soft-close hinges that match your Metod system – they often come with a small, well-explained mounting system.

- Loosen screws, position the fitting
- Screw in the soft-close element
- This will make your doors not only quieter but also close much more smoothly (goodbye loud slamming!).

If you’ve lost the installation instructions, Ikea often provides PDFs for download – definitely worth it the first time. Good luck!

Soft-close fittings are usually mounted directly onto the hinges with screws. Remove the doors, attach the fitting, rehang the doors, and adjust. This is generally sufficient.

To retrofit the soft-close feature on Ikea Metod doors, I recommend the following procedure:

- Unscrew and remove the doors to gain better access to the hinges.
- Use the original Ikea soft-close fittings, as they are perfectly matched.
- Check the mounting holes on the hinges and pre-drill them if necessary.
- Attach the soft-close mechanism to the hinge base and secure it firmly with the included screws.
- Re-hang the doors and then fine-tune the alignment by adjusting the screws.

This ensures an accurate installation and trouble-free soft-close operation.

If you have any further questions about screw length or suitable fittings, feel free to ask.

I agree with this. Even though there are alternative dampers from third-party manufacturers, the original Ikea soft-close components guarantee that the attachment points and dimensions fit exactly.

- Installation is done at the hinge base, usually with two screws.

- It is important to align the fitting correctly before tightening the screws to ensure the door closes smoothly and evenly.

- If you plan to install it with the door still attached, try at least to remove the door first; this makes handling easier and helps prevent damage to the finish or cabinet.

If you need specific screw lengths and torque values, Ikea usually provides this information in the assembly instructions or technical data sheets. This ensures the stability of the installation.
