Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I purchased the Ikea METOD kitchen cabinets and am currently facing a problem that is not so straightforward for me: My kitchen wall is unfortunately not completely straight but has slight unevenness. Because of this, the METOD doors cannot be installed cleanly and precisely – they often do not hang perfectly level or close flush.
My question is therefore: How can I attach the doors on the Ikea METOD kitchen so that they fit optimally despite uneven walls? Are there special techniques, tools, or adjustments on the hinges that make this possible?
I would appreciate detailed tips, as a clean appearance is very important to me and I don’t want to simply mount the doors with large gaps between the door and the wall. Thanks in advance!

Hello Jontau,
Adjusting the doors of Ikea METOD cabinets on uneven walls is often challenging, but there are several aspects you can consider:
- Make full use of the adjustable hinges. They allow three-dimensional adjustment (height, side, and depth). You can use the depth adjustment to compensate for uneven walls.
- Check whether the Metod cabinet carcasses are perfectly vertical and horizontal. If not, it can help to align the carcass correctly against the wall using wedges or shimming plates.
- For very uneven walls, it may be helpful to install thin spacers or flexible leveling strips behind the carcasses, sized accordingly.
- Pay attention to the correct gap between the door and the carcass (about 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches)) to prevent the doors from hitting the wall.
- It is also useful to fully adjust one door first and then align the remaining doors based on that.
If you follow these points, you should be able to install the doors much more precisely even on uneven walls.

I had the same issue with my first METOD kitchen some time ago. My wall is a bit uneven, which only becomes obvious when the doors don’t close properly. What helped me was:
- Be gentle with the cordless screwdriver, adjust a few millimeters while tightening, and keep checking repeatedly.
- I used flexible felt strips behind the hinge area to reduce pressure on the doors.
Sometimes it also helps to level the doors with a spirit level first and then secure everything permanently. I totally understand not wanting large gaps between the door and the wall.
Good luck with the adjustments!

I recommend following these steps:
- Align the cabinet carcass as precisely as possible using a spirit level.
- To compensate for height differences, place wooden or plastic shims underneath.
- First adjust the height of the hinges so that the doors hang level.
- Then make the lateral adjustments so that the doors align flush with each other.
- Use the depth adjustment to set the gap to the wall so the door closes properly despite wall unevenness.
If this is still not sufficient, you can also attach small shims to the back of the door. Ikea hinges are sturdy and can tolerate careful adjustments.
Good luck—these assembly tasks require patience and precise fine-tuning.
