Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA and wanted to equip it with the matching doors. After assembling it, I noticed that the doors don’t align flush. Visually, the doors are slightly offset; some edges protrude or are slightly recessed compared to the frame. It almost seems like the doors are not properly adjusted.

I have already checked if the hinges are installed correctly, and all screws are tight. Still, I can’t seem to get them properly aligned. Is there a specific mechanism or procedure to adjust the doors precisely? I would like to know the best approach, especially since the gap varies between several doors.

Has anyone experienced this issue and can offer tips on how to set the Kallax doors correctly so that they close flush and evenly? Thanks in advance!

This is a common issue with Kallax doors, usually related to hinge adjustment. IKEA hinges are adjustable and typically offer three types of adjustments: horizontal, vertical, and depth. These options allow for precise door alignment.

I recommend loosening the screws on the hinges slightly first, then making one adjustment at a time. Follow this order:

1. Vertical adjustment: This changes the height of the door so it’s not too low or too high.
2. Horizontal adjustment: This sets the gap between the door and the frame so it’s even all around.
3. Depth adjustment: This corrects how flush the door sits.

If you go through these steps carefully and make only small changes each time, the doors should become flush. Sometimes washers can help in certain positions if the screw adjustments alone aren’t sufficient.

It can also help to fully remove and remount the doors if the hinges are mounted crookedly. Most hinges are self-supporting, meaning you can adjust them with the screws on the side panels without taking the doors completely off.

If your fittings are different, please write again, and I can provide more specific advice.

In addition to the previous explanations, I would like to provide a simple step-by-step guide on how I align my Kallax doors flush.

1. Loosen screws: First, slightly loosen the screws on all hinges so the door can move freely.
2. Height adjustment: Adjust the vertical screws to ensure the door fits correctly both at the top and bottom.
3. Side or depth adjustment: IKEA hinges have an adjustment screw on the side. With this, you can bring the door closer to the cabinet body or move it further away until it sits flush.
4. Check gap width: Make sure the gap all around between the door and the cabinet body is about the same width. A distance between 2 and 3 mm (0.08 and 0.12 inches) is usually ideal.
5. Tighten screws: Once the door is properly positioned, tighten the screws securely.

Important: If you notice uneven gaps on different doors, it’s worth adjusting all doors slowly and systematically before tightening the screws fully.

Tip: Using a tool with fine rotational control, such as a screwdriver with a magnetic tip, can help you make more precise adjustments since the hinges are very sensitive.

If the doors still don’t close perfectly after adjustment, check whether the cabinet itself is level. Sometimes the doors only appear misaligned because the unit is not standing perfectly straight.

This is a point often overlooked. Even if the doors are properly adjusted, an unevenly positioned shelving unit can cause the issue. I recommend first precisely aligning the Kallax, possibly using a spirit level and small height-adjustment pads under the feet or at the back.

This is also important. Especially with new furniture, the holes for the hinges may be slightly misaligned or the screws may not sit flush. In this case, it helps to remove the doors entirely and reattach the hinges before starting fine adjustments.

One more tip: The doors on Kallax are not solid but rather thin and lightweight, which means they can shift quickly from adjustments. Patience and gradual tweaking are therefore necessary.

If possible, use an extra helping hand to hold the door while you loosen and adjust the screws.
