Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where the doors of my Billy wardrobe squeak or creak when opening and closing. This is not only annoying in everyday use, but the unpleasant noise also occurs even with a light touch on the doors. I suspect the problem may be related to the hinges or the material, but I’m not sure how to best and permanently fix it. Does anyone have experience with this specific issue with Billy doors or similar furniture? I would appreciate any helpful tips, especially regarding possible causes and the best ways to resolve it.

Hey, I know this problem all too well! 😄 Often, it’s the hinges that start squeaking over time because they’ve dried out a bit. My tip: just spray a little silicone spray or graphite powder on the hinge – but only a small amount, otherwise it gets messy. 🙂

Sometimes the doors rub against the frame if they’re slightly warped, which can also cause noise. A little adjustment of the hinges with a small screwdriver usually helps to get the door hanging properly again.

If you want to be extra sure, small felt or foam rubber strips at the contact points can mechanically reduce the squeaking. Good luck!

Interesting, Nicksin, that you recommend silicone spray – it might help in the short term, but which product is actually suitable? Some sprays can damage the plastic material of the hinges or dissolve the paint.

Furthermore, I wonder if the squeaking might be caused by loosened screws over time rather than a lubrication issue. In that case, it would be a mechanical problem, not a lubrication one. I recommend checking first whether the screws are tight before applying any chemical lubricants.

Could the squeaking possibly be caused by the screws loosening over time?

That almost sounds like anyone who just sprays a little oil on the hinge is a wannabe handyman 😄 But seriously, I also think that solid mechanical causes are often underestimated.

In my experience, a Billy-style cabinet can definitely settle a bit – materials shift, screws loosen, and especially with frequently used doors, such creaking can develop quickly.

I can almost guarantee that if you tighten the screws and then use high-quality oil or EP grease, the noise will stop. I’ve only made things worse with cheap sprays in the past. Quality products are absolutely essential here!

Thanks for the tips so far!

Tomorrow, I will check and tighten all the screws on the door hinges. It makes sense that they can loosen over time.

Does anyone have specific recommendations for lubricants that are compatible with plastic parts and have long-lasting effects? I want to avoid causing damage to the door material by using the wrong products.

Also, how often should this maintenance be performed to prevent squeaking from recurring?

To address arifdeos’ question regarding suitable lubricants: For doors like those on a Billy-style cabinet, I recommend preferably using Teflon-based or PTFE sprays. These are suitable for both metal and plastic, do not leave a greasy residue that attracts dust, and provide long-lasting effects.

Procedure:
1. Tighten screws to rule out mechanical causes.
2. Clean the surface of the hinges to remove old lubricants and dirt.
3. Apply a thin layer of Teflon spray and let it dry before moving the door.

Frequency: Once a year should be sufficient unless the environment is very dusty or humid, in which case treatment can be increased to once or twice a year.
