hansmuGood morning everyone,
I would like to ask a specific question regarding the repair of dents and scratches on IKEA Hemnes furniture. I am particularly interested in which materials and methods are recommended to make small to medium-sized scratches on white lacquered or stained surfaces as invisible as possible.
I know there are various products like repair markers or wax fillers, but which ones work best for the Hemnes series?
Additionally, it would be helpful to know whether, for larger damages, sanding and repainting is generally advisable, or if these pieces are usually not intended to be refurbished.
Does anyone have practical experience with repairing these surfaces, perhaps with tips on preparation (cleaning, sanding), application, and potential pitfalls?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello hansmu,
First of all, a brief overview: The Hemnes series from IKEA is mostly made of solid pine wood and is either painted white or oiled, so the repair should be approached methodically.
Here is a guide with my recommendations:
- Cleaning: Before any repair, the area must be thoroughly cleaned – no dust, grease, or dirt should remain on the repair spot.
- Small scratches: For minor scratches, wax sticks or so-called furniture repair kits, usually available in matching colors, work well. These fill in the scratches and make them much less visible.
- Larger dents: In this case, sanding the damaged area is unavoidable. It is recommended to gently sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper until the edges are smooth.
- After sanding, lightly dust off the surface and then touch up with white paint or suitable furniture paint. Make sure to use products appropriate for wood.
- Tips: Hemnes furniture usually has an opaque finish that is not as durable as industrial coatings. Therefore, apply thin layers, several coats, and allow sufficient drying time (several hours depending on the product).
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents after the repair to protect the surface.
Usually, the combination of sanding and painting is enough, but for a perfect finish, you can follow up with a fine abrasive pad (or very fine wet sandpaper).
If you would like more specific product recommendations, I can provide names or sources.
Good luck!

It is also important to ensure the surface is completely sanded to a matte finish before painting to achieve good adhesion. The paint should then be applied in thin layers using a fine brush.
Do not use wax pastes for larger dents, as they do not provide a lasting solution and often result in uneven finishes.
For minor scratches, furniture touch-up pens or colored pencils matched to the Hemnes color shades work well. However, these should not be used as the sole repair method for deeper damage.
A final light sanding with 400-grit sandpaper can visually improve the overall effect.

I know there are various products like repair markers or wax sticks, but which ones are best suited for the Hemnes series? As a supplement, I want to emphasize that for Hemnes furniture made of pine wood, especially for painted white surfaces, acrylic paint designed specifically for this purpose in spray or brush-on form is preferred.
Furthermore, after removing or smoothing out the dent or scratch with fine sandpaper (at least 220 grit), a primer that also adheres to wood should always be applied to achieve the best final result.
Using furniture wax or repair markers is only recommended for quick cosmetic fixes on very small scratches and should not be considered a substitute for a painted repair on medium-sized damage.
Finally, it should be noted that the sheen level of previous surface paints on IKEA Hemnes can vary, so testing on a hidden area is advisable.
