Hello everyone,

I’m starting this discussion because I’m looking for the best way to use the IKEA Hemnes as storage in the hallway. It’s not just about storing items, but also about making the space functional and visually appealing. My hallway is quite narrow but long, and I have a Hemnes dresser with several drawers. The main goal is to store shoes, keys, hats and scarves, and occasionally bags—basically everyday items that need to be quickly accessible.

I’m especially interested in how others use this piece of furniture in their hallways, whether they add external accessories, how they organize the drawers best, and any hacks that help maximize the available storage space.

What has your experience been? Have you tried different approaches? What worked well and what didn’t? I look forward to your ideas and tips.

To make the most efficient use of the IKEA Hemnes dresser in the hallway, I recommend a structured organization approach to maximize the available storage space.

- Shoe storage: The lower drawers are well suited for flat shoe boxes or separately available insert trays to keep shoes tidy and organized.

- Keys and small items: A small organizer or tray on the top surface prevents searching and helps maintain order.

- Hats, scarves, and bags can be stored neatly in separate compartments or with basket inserts inside the drawers.

- To create additional storage space, the Hemnes dresser can be complemented with hooks on the side, for example, to hang lanyards or bags.

It is especially important to clearly prioritize items according to how frequently they are used to avoid ongoing clutter. The piece of furniture itself is sturdy but requires clear organizational measures to prevent the hallway from looking overcrowded.

This is a point I also find very important. For months, I have been using simple, self-adhesive hooks on the side panel next to the Hemnes dresser to store key rings and lighter shopping bags in a space-saving way. I organize the large drawers with small baskets, which helps keep things tidy, especially scarves and hats that would otherwise quickly turn into a messy pile.

Additionally, I store small fabric pouches in one drawer that I use to quickly pack my bag when needed (sunglasses, gloves, scarf), making the morning routine of leaving the house much easier.

Important: The Hemnes is sturdy enough to accommodate these additions without losing stability.

To enhance organization in the hallway using a Hemnes dresser, simple and practical modifications can make a big difference.

- Interior organization: Adding dividers or height-adjustable inserts inside the drawers creates customized compartments for various items. This way, the interior can be better organized than with an empty drawer space.

- Shoe storage: One option is to use ultra-thin plastic shoe stack frames, which store shoes on a few levels while allowing air circulation.

- Surface optimization: A washable mat on the top surface makes cleaning easier, especially when keys or similar items are frequently placed there.

- Space utilization: Depending on the hallway, wall-mounted magnetic strips above the Hemnes dresser can provide additional storage for keys or small metal objects without taking up floor space.

I am interested in the exact available area in the hallway to provide more targeted advice on which modifications would be most effective.

I’m happy to answer that: The hallway is approximately 2.40 meters (7 feet 10 inches) long and about 95 cm (37 inches) wide. Along the wall is a Hemnes chest of drawers measuring 90 cm (35 inches) wide, 96 cm (38 inches) high, and 48 cm (19 inches) deep. To the right of it, there is space for a narrow coat rack, and on the left, a slim area for occasional jackets. It is especially important to me that the chest does not appear too bulky, as the hallway is relatively narrow. The wall above the chest extends about 50 cm (20 inches) in height up to the ceiling.

I want the chest to avoid looking cluttered but still serve as an organizing unit for typical hallway items.

Based on the dimensions and requirements, I would recommend organizing the piece of furniture into zones:

- The top shelf is suitable for a narrow tray or bowl for mail, keys, and wallet. Ensure clear separation to avoid mixing everything together.

- The upper drawers can be equipped with removable fabric boxes or insert baskets. This helps keep smaller accessories like gloves, hats, or bags organized.

- In the lower, deeper drawers, shallow plastic boxes or shoe boxes with transparent lids can help store shoes neatly and visibly.

- A slim hook on the side of the dresser or on the wall next to the wardrobe can keep frequently used items within easy reach and reduce clutter in the hallway.

It is important to use the frequency of item use as a guideline for their placement: frequently used items should be stored at the top where they are clearly visible, while less frequently used items can be placed lower down.
