Hello everyone,

I’m starting this discussion because I’m looking for the best way to use the IKEA Hemnes as storage in the hallway. It’s not just about storing items, but also about making the space functional and visually appealing. My hallway is quite narrow but long, and I have a Hemnes dresser with several drawers. The main goal is to store shoes, keys, hats and scarves, and occasionally bags—basically everyday items that need to be quickly accessible.

I’m especially interested in how others use this piece of furniture in their hallways, whether they add external accessories, how they organize the drawers best, and any hacks that help maximize the available storage space.

What has your experience been? Have you tried different approaches? What worked well and what didn’t? I look forward to your ideas and tips.

It is important to use the frequency of item use as a guideline for their placement: frequently used items at the top clearly visible, less frequently used items lower down.

I agree and would add that thoughtful labeling of drawers or baskets can be useful, especially when multiple people live in the household. Colored fabric boxes or labels can also help improve organization and make daily use more efficient.

Additionally, regular checking and decluttering is advisable, particularly in hallway areas where unnecessary small items tend to accumulate quickly, making it harder to maintain order.

Another aspect of using the Hemnes in the hallway is combining it with power strips and charging stations for mobile devices. When the surface is located close to a power outlet, charging cables or USB chargers can be discreetly integrated. This adds value, for example, by allowing quick charging of key fobs with batteries or other small electronic devices.

Additionally, a narrow tray or small dish can help prevent damage to the wood caused by charging cables. This type of multifunctionality makes optimal use of the available space.

My recommendation is based on the multifunctional use of the Hemnes dresser:

- Plastic or bamboo drawer organizers provide extra protection and help keep things tidy, especially for small items.

- The back of the dresser can—if possible—be equipped with self-adhesive hooks or small shelves.

- For greater flexibility, consider placing smaller containers inside the drawers that can be easily removed when you quickly need hats or scarves, for example, when going shopping.

- A small shoe rack under the dresser can create additional storage capacity without narrowing the hallway unnecessarily.

Avoiding excessive decoration and focusing on clear functionality helps maintain clean lines in a narrow hallway.

Thank you very much for this advice – that is exactly my goal: not to overload, but to create a shell that makes daily handling easier for me. I will definitely try your tips regarding the insertion boxes and the clear structure.

Who else has recommendations for especially sturdy insertion boxes that also visually match Hemnes? Also, I would be interested to know if anyone has experience with custom-made dividers in Hemnes drawers and how they were constructed.
