Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Brimnes furniture, which is unfortunately damaged. Specifically, there are partially stripped screw holes and chipped edges on a bed and a wardrobe. I would like to know what repair options are available to restore the furniture as sturdy and visually appealing as possible.

Are there any special techniques, materials, or tools that work particularly well for repairing parts that are mostly made of particleboard-like material? How can the damaged areas be best reinforced or refurbished without having to replace the entire piece of furniture?

I would appreciate any tips on restoration or on replacing individual parts!

I find this question very important because many people give up immediately when something breaks in inexpensive furniture like the Brimnes series.

To be honest: particleboard is an inexpensive material and cannot be treated like solid wood. My hypothesis is that better repairs are only possible with aids that reinforce the material, such as metal brackets or special wood glues designed for laminate/engineered wood products. A bit of creativity is needed; otherwise, it’s often not really worth it.

Anyone who has drilled into these standard hollow-core panels knows that their limits are reached quite quickly.

Screw holes can be effectively filled with wood filler and then re-drilled. For chipped edges, wood glue and sandpaper work well.

Metal brackets or additional screws can help improve stability.

I’m happy to provide a brief step-by-step guide in case anyone needs it:

- First, remove all loose parts and clean the surface
- Fill screw holes with wood filler or wood putty and allow it to dry completely
- Smooth the areas with fine sandpaper
- For larger damages, you can use wood filler or epoxy resin to restore stability
- For edges, I use replacement parts (e.g., edge protectors) or cover them with matching veneer
- Finally, seal everything with wood varnish or film

Common mistake: inserting screws too early. The material needs to be fully hardened; otherwise, it will tear out again.

Hey everyone, I’m always amazed at what you can do with a simple “pressed wood monster” like Brimnes! 😄

That’s true, but with a bit of patience and the right techniques, you can really work wonders with these pieces. I once repaired a torn-out hole using wooden dowels and wood glue – basically like a mini puzzle, filling in the holes. After that, I was able to reinsert the screw, and the bed holds up 😉

By the way, I like to repair edges with color-matched acrylic sealants – they can be easily sanded and painted over once dry. It almost looks like new!

A professional repair of Brimnes furniture should always begin with understanding the exact type of material involved. Typically, these pieces are made from particleboard with a melamine coating, which makes repairs more challenging.

- Screw holes can be best repaired by inserting a wooden or plastic dowel. Once dry, the screw can be reinserted.
- For chipped edges, veneer strips or special edge protectors that can be glued on are suitable.

It is important to ensure that no moisture penetrates the material during the repair, as this can cause further damage.

For larger damages, I would also recommend considering reinforcement with metal brackets.
