Hello dear community,

I want to build a functional kitchen island with plenty of storage using Ikea Besta units and have already given it some thought. My goal is to create a sturdy, practical island that serves both as a workspace and provides optimal storage for kitchen utensils. The following points are important to me:

- The height of the island should be ergonomic for comfortable work.
- The Besta modules should be combined to create a variety of storage options: drawers, open shelves, possibly inserts for waste sorting or kitchen appliances.
- The countertop should be durable and easy to clean, ideally with overhanging edges to allow for seating.
- Stability is naturally crucial, especially if the units are placed on legs or made mobile.

Has anyone here had experience converting Besta units into a kitchen island? How did you stabilize the modules, what dimensions and combinations do you recommend, and which countertops fit well? It would also be interesting to know if specific feet or tracks are suitable for connecting the units or making them movable.

I look forward to tips, experiences, and concrete examples of implementation!

Thank you in advance.

Hello diripe,

first of all, you have taken on a solid project. Ikea Besta is definitely a good base to build a kitchen island from, but you should pay attention to certain aspects regarding stability and functionality:

- Stability: I would recommend securely fastening the individual Besta units together rather than just stacking them loosely. Use sturdy angle brackets or metal connectors for this. Especially if you use legs, make sure to reinforce the countertop properly, as it will be subjected to pressure and stress during use.

- Storage space: Besta offers various interior fittings. For example, I use drawer inserts with a soft-close function, which are excellent for kitchen utensils. Open shelves work well for frequently used items or decorative elements, but since they are visible, they are less practical for kitchen use per se.

- Countertop: Make sure the countertop is at least 4 cm thick (1.5 inches), as this gives it a more premium look and makes it more durable. In terms of materials, multiplex boards with an HPL surface or a solid wood countertop are both good options, depending on your taste. Important: Attaching the countertop is key – it’s best to use clamps or special holders that are easy to remove.

- Additional tip: If you want to create seating, the island should have an overhang or an attached panel on at least one side that extends at least 30 cm (12 inches) for comfortable seating.

I hope this gives you some helpful points to consider. If you like, I can also provide recommendations for suitable dimensions or assist you in choosing legs.

Connect the Besta units directly using heavy-duty brackets.
Use a countertop that is at least 3-4cm thick (1¼-1½ inches), either solid wood or HPL.
The standard height with legs is 90cm (35 inches), which is ergonomically optimal.
Install drawers for cutlery and cooking utensils.
Use caster wheels only if the island needs to be movable; otherwise, secure it in place.

I completely agree! 😄

Also, if you want to add some stylish storage space, it’s worth making the fronts of the Besta units a bit more colorful – this way, your island looks not only functional but also lively. A few open shelves for cookbooks or attractive storage jars also help to visually lighten the whole setup.

Regarding stability: For my project, I added an extra central support beam under the countertop, screwed to the ends of the cabinet frames, so the units don’t wobble even during heavy cooking.

Seating? Definitely! With a nice bar stool tucked underneath, it looks really cool – but make sure to allow at least 35 cm (14 inches) of countertop overhang; otherwise, your knees will bump uncomfortably against the edge.

And last but not least, don’t forget the small details: soft-close hinges add comfort, and matching handles or push-to-open mechanisms make everything feel truly high-end.
