Hello everyone, I recently took a closer look at my IKEA Platsa cabinet doors and noticed several scratches that bother me quite a bit. My question is: What is the best way to repair scratches on IKEA Platsa fronts? I am especially interested in whether there are simple home remedies to conceal small scratches or if it is better to use specialized repair kits. I have seen that these fronts have a plastic or melamine-coated surface, which probably makes repairing them different from wood. What is the best approach to fix them without the repair being noticeable or making the surface worse? Are there any special recommendations regarding surface preparation or follow-up treatment? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

For small scratches, I would recommend using a furniture repair marker that matches the color. Simply apply it, let it dry, and if necessary, gently buff the area. For larger scratches, a fine filler putty can be helpful.

That’s a good and quite complex question, as PLATSA fronts typically consist of an MDF board with a melamine-coated surface, which is very durable but somewhat sensitive to scratches. Here’s a more detailed overview of how you can proceed:

- First, it’s very important to thoroughly clean the surface before starting the repair. Any grease or dust will prevent a good result.
- Small, superficial scratches can be treated with color-matched furniture repair markers or waxes. When using waxes, make sure they are specifically designed for coated furniture.
- For deeper scratches, it is recommended to use a filler material such as a furniture filler that is appropriate for coated surfaces. Apply the material sparingly, smooth it carefully, and allow it to dry completely.
- After drying, a fine polish (e.g., plastic polish) can help to match the repaired area to the gloss level of the rest of the front.

If the damage is larger and uneven, replacing the front might be considered, as achieving a completely invisible smoothing on coated boards is usually not possible.

I would be interested to know: What kind of scratches have you noticed exactly? Only light superficial ones, or are they deep enough to reveal the color layer or even the MDF underneath?

I think that’s quite a drastic suggestion. Especially with IKEA furniture, items are often discarded or replaced too quickly instead of trying creative repair methods. Of course, the surface is melamine-coated, but that’s actually what makes some repair attempts unnecessarily complicated—because you often don’t have the right products or feel unsure about the process.

You could also say that small scratches are a sign of a well-used piece of furniture. Does everything always have to be perfect? Honestly, glossy or high-gloss finishes are prone to wear anyway—if you don’t apply a protective film, you just have to accept that. And if you really want to tinker with repairs: sure, there are repair kits available, but they tend to be expensive and rarely deliver the promised results.

Maybe it’s best to just accept that signs of use are part of normal wear. :-)
