Hello everyone, I am planning to create a room division in my open-plan kitchen and living area and was considering the Ikea Platsa system. My main question is: How can I design Ikea Platsa as a room divider so that it looks attractive, is functional, and also provides some storage space? It is important to me that the room divider does not appear too bulky and that the space still feels airy. Which options or approaches are particularly recommended, and what should be especially considered during assembly? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

I would recommend positioning Platsa vertically and combining different elements (e.g., with doors and open compartments). This creates a spacious yet practical room divider. Mounted on casters, it can also be made mobile.

For designing an Ikea Platsa room divider, I recommend planning with modular units to create both open and closed storage areas. Open compartments can be used for decoration or books, while closed compartments are suitable for storing items out of sight. Additionally, connections between individual Platsa modules should be carefully assembled to ensure stability. A practical tip is to keep the room divider no taller than 180 cm (6 feet) so that it defines the space without fully enclosing it. Using lacquered or foil-covered fronts in a light color helps to maintain an open and airy atmosphere.

Thank you, that’s a very helpful point! Regarding the limit of 180 cm (6 feet), would you also recommend something around 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in height if I use the room divider as a visual separation but still want to maintain some privacy? Or would that reduce the sense of openness too much?

Basically, yes, but it really requires individual consideration. A height of 2 meters (6.5 feet) provides more privacy but can visually divide the space strongly and might make it feel cramped. This can be counterproductive, especially in small rooms. If you want a balance between openness and privacy, a combination of half-height modules and open elements with plants or fabric curtains might be advisable.

For implementation, I would recommend the following procedure:

- Measure the installation site to determine the maximum dimensions.
- Select and combine various Platsa modules (e.g., open compartments, doors, drawers).
- Plan possible modifications (e.g., removing back panels for visibility or light penetration).
- Assemble the modules on a sturdy base, possibly anchoring to the wall or floor.
- Optionally, integrate lighting to further highlight the room divider.

Common mistakes during assembly are loose connections or misalignment. Therefore, be sure to tighten screws only by hand and check all connections with a spirit level and a square.
