TRA70Hello everyone,
I am currently planning a child-friendly kitchen for our family using Ikea Metod cabinets. My focus is not only on durable materials but especially on thoughtful design to make the kitchen safe, practical, and suitable for children.
I am particularly interested in your experiences with Ikea Metod regarding child-safe and easily accessible storage solutions. Which cabinets and drawers work best to accommodate children’s reach without creating safety hazards? Any tips for integrating work surfaces at child-friendly heights or suitable appliances would also be very helpful.
Additionally, I am wondering how to best ensure safety when it comes to soft-close drawers, especially those with handles or push-to-open mechanisms.
Does anyone have specific ideas, planning examples, or perhaps even completed projects they can share their opinions on?
Looking forward to your advice!

Wow, great project! 👍 Ikea Metod really offers a lot of possibilities, and with a bit of creativity, you can design a kitchen where the kids are not only safe but also enjoy helping out! 😊
What I definitely recommend:
- Plan affordable drawers at children’s height, for example, using the kids’ sitting height as a reference.
- Soft-close drawers are fantastic because they eliminate the risk of finger pinching!
- I avoid push-to-open mechanisms, as they can be tricky for little hands 😊
I have worked with Metod myself and found the Alex drawers especially sturdy and child-friendly. Good luck, you’ve got this! 🚀

Hello TRA70,
For planning child-friendly kitchen furniture based on Ikea Metod, I recommend considering the following points:
- Cabinets should offer as low worktop heights as possible, ideally between 60 and 70 cm (24 and 28 inches), as children are usually under 120 cm (47 inches) tall.
- Storage solutions: Large drawers provide better visibility and easier access. For safety, use drawer locks that are compatible with Metod.
- Materials: When selecting front panels, choose durable, easy-to-clean surfaces.
For drawer safety, mechanical child locks are advisable. These should be easy for adults to open but prevent children from pulling the drawers out.
In general, the Ikea Metod system is flexible, allowing modules to be combined to cover different heights and functions.
I hope this information is helpful to you.

Good day TRA70,
You have asked a very clear and specific question, which makes it much easier to provide a targeted answer.
My experience with child-friendly kitchens based on the Ikea Metod system shows:
- Work surfaces at varying heights can be easily implemented by combining several cabinet modules.
- For small children, kitchen cabinets with lower drawers and open areas are suitable, as they encourage independent loading and unloading.
- For safety, a combination of soft-close drawers and, if necessary, mechanical locks is advisable, especially when toddlers are around who do not yet have controlled use of furniture.
I would also make sure that there are no sharp edges or protruding handles at child height – handleless fronts or integrated rounded edges are beneficial here.
How tall are your children and approximately how old? That could help to plan even more precisely.

Thank you for the feedback so far!
@Tommy38: Our children are 3 and 6 years old. The goal is for them to become more independent in the kitchen as early as possible, for example by being able to reach their own plates or supplies. That’s why I’m considering a few smaller drawers and maybe a small shelf under the countertop.
@KLONA: I was also thinking about mechanical child safety locks, but I wonder if they might become annoying with frequent use. Are there any recommendations for particularly practical solutions?
@reoleon47: I take your warning about push-to-open seriously! I’ll probably avoid that to prevent frustration.
I would like to understand better if anyone knows suitable combinations of Ikea modules with special child safety locks and how that fits with the budget.

Good morning,
I would like to go into more detail on this topic, as planning a child-friendly kitchen with Ikea Metod certainly requires more careful consideration, especially when safety and ergonomics are important.
First, I recommend taking precise measurements during the planning phase: measure the reach and range of movement of your children in the intended kitchen space. This allows you to strategically place lower cabinets and better secure higher, potentially dangerous areas.
Regarding furniture selection:
- Ikea Metod fronts have standardized cabinet depths of 60 cm (24 inches), which is standard for most kitchens. Plan the countertop height individually, for example, using adjustable feet or intermediate elements.
- For child safety, I recommend combining mechanical child locks (such as magnetic locks for drawers with metal plates) with specially removable drawer inserts so that children cannot reach heavy items.
- Soft-close mechanisms are generally advisable as they reduce the risk of pinch injuries, but check the durability of the soft-close system, since some cheaper versions may weaken over time.
In terms of budget: Ikea Metod is cost-effective; investments in child safety features incur relatively low additional costs, but are definitely worthwhile.
I would also suggest using Ikea’s own planning software and role-playing different scenarios with the children to find the best solution.
In summary: Custom measurements and attentive safety features are key!
