Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether and how a soft-close system can be retrofitted to Ikea BESTÅ doors. My specific question is: Is there a proven and practical guide or recommended method for equipping BESTÅ doors with soft-close hinges or components without damaging the furniture or affecting its appearance?

I understand that Ikea often does not offer this option directly, but there might be third-party solutions or modifications that work well. It is important to me to have a detailed guide including information on suitable products, possible cable attachments or modifications to the door or cabinet, as well as tips on which soft-close systems are recommended.

Perhaps someone has personal experience or knows sources where good instructions can be found. Many thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

This is an interesting question, but first it is important to check whether the existing doors and hinges are mechanically suitable for soft-close functionality.

Ikea generally uses simple cup hinges for BESTÅ, which are not always easy to modify. Often, original soft-close hinges are offered only together with specific drillings in the cabinet and door.

Any guide must therefore also explain how to make these drillings yourself without damaging the furniture. However, this requires precise tools and experience.

Therefore, anyone looking for a universal step-by-step guide should first consider the technical feasibility and compatibility, otherwise the attempt may end in frustration.

Hello, I just wanted to say: Although it’s not entirely straightforward, retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on BESTÅ units is definitely not impossible! 🙂

I did it myself and can only encourage you to give it a try. Just get the right soft-close hinges (ideally compatible models with drilling templates) and proceed carefully.

You need to measure precisely, drill properly, and sometimes replace the old hinge with a soft-close replacement part.

I was skeptical the first time too, but the result is really worth it — much more comfortable and no more slamming doors! So go ahead and take on the project confidently!

For better understanding: Ikea BESTÅ doors use standard cup hinges with a “clip” mechanism.

Soft-close functionality can be achieved by replacing the entire hinge module with a compatible soft-close hinge. There is no official Ikea retrofit solution, so third-party products must be used.

A retrofit guide should cover the following steps:
- Removing the original hinge and measuring the drill holes
- Choosing a compatible soft-close hinge model with the same or adjustable hole patterns
- Drilling new mounting holes on the cabinet, if necessary, with great care to avoid damage
- Installing the soft-close hinge and adjusting the door position

The main challenge is accurately attaching the mechanism without visible flaws or fit issues.

If no re-drilling is required, the swap can be quick and simple. Otherwise, caution is advised. Tips from experience or detailed construction plans are very helpful.

Thank you for the clear answer.

My main concern is the point about “no official retrofit system” – does anyone here know of specific third-party suppliers that offer soft-close hinges compatible with Ikea BESTÅ in terms of drilling pattern and size?

I’m also interested in whether such products come with ready-made drilling templates or if precise measurements need to be taken manually. Are there any experiences regarding how complex the installation is, especially in terms of having to modify or rework drill holes?

I would appreciate it if someone could provide concrete product recommendations or sources that make retrofitting easier.

I recommend not just going for the cheapest model at first glance when it comes to these retrofit solutions.

In my opinion, there are candidates from brands like Hettich or Blum that offer similar dimensions and drilling patterns, but not every series is identical to Ikea’s. It often does not work without checking first.

This also means that a drilling template almost always needs to be customized individually. Measuring and marking again, making a drilling jig—that’s part of the process.

Furthermore, be sure to check whether the soft-close mechanism is integrated into the hinge itself or if separate dampers need to be installed. The latter can affect stability and closing quality if the mountings are not optimal.

My tip: If possible, try it first on an old, no longer used door panel, or compare hinges and drillings carefully before modifying the actual piece of furniture.
