Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether and how a soft-close system can be retrofitted to Ikea BESTÅ doors. My specific question is: Is there a proven and practical guide or recommended method for equipping BESTÅ doors with soft-close hinges or components without damaging the furniture or affecting its appearance?

I understand that Ikea often does not offer this option directly, but there might be third-party solutions or modifications that work well. It is important to me to have a detailed guide including information on suitable products, possible cable attachments or modifications to the door or cabinet, as well as tips on which soft-close systems are recommended.

Perhaps someone has personal experience or knows sources where good instructions can be found. Many thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

My tip: If possible, first try on an old, unused door leaf or compare hinges and drillings carefully before working on the actual piece of furniture.

I can totally confirm this! I actually borrowed a door first and tried a few hinges on it. That way, I was able to find hinges that really fit and work perfectly.

What I’d like to add is this: if you want to retrofit soft-close dampers separately, pay attention to the weight and thickness of the doors.

Some dampers have limited capacities – otherwise, this can quickly lead to malfunctions. So make sure to check the manufacturer’s specifications carefully here as well.

Good luck to everyone who tries it! It’s truly worth it and turns simple furniture into a really high-quality product.

I would like to add a few points that have already been mentioned in other posts.

- The best and simplest solution for soft-close on Ikea BESTÅ is actually a complete replacement of the hinges with compatible soft-close models, preferably from reputable manufacturers with verified dimensions.

- Drill templates are usually only available with the original mounting hardware; with third-party suppliers, custom adjustments are often necessary. Precise preparation is therefore essential.

- The stability of the doors should not be underestimated: Dampers that are too strong can cause premature wear on lighter doors.

- For attaching the soft-close mechanisms, a fine drill bit is recommended, and possibly pre-puncturing with a nail to prevent splitting the wood material.

- From my experience, retrofitting positively affects the lifespan and ease of use of the doors, provided the installation is done carefully.

I hope this helps you.
