Piattila4724 Jun 2023 19:37Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Pax system from IKEA and am now facing the challenge of efficiently organizing many smaller boxes and containers inside it. Since the compartments are sometimes quite tall but not very deep, I’m wondering how to best arrange small storage units to maximize space while still having quick access to the contents.
Does anyone have advice on whether stackable boxes are better, whether shelves or drawers work best, and if special inserts or dividers are helpful? I’m also considering how to optimally store items like socks, accessories, or small craft supplies without everything getting mixed up or spending too much time searching.
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I think your question is very well considered; this is a common issue with PAX systems, especially when you want to neatly store many small items.
First, I would recommend combining different depths and heights:
- Shelves are great for making better use of space in tall compartments, allowing you to stack multiple rows of boxes.
- Drawers with built-in inserts or using dividers are very helpful to keep small items like accessories or socks neatly separated. This way, nothing gets lost and everything stays easily accessible.
You can often find fairly affordable transparent plastic boxes that are easy to label. The visibility helps with quickly finding things. You can also use flexible compartment dividers, which you can customize to fit the shelf dimensions.
Another tip is to organize boxes by theme or frequency of use and then place them accordingly towards the front or higher up.
If you are planning with sliding doors, make sure the boxes are not too tall so the doors can close properly.
I hope this already helps you! If you want, I can also share examples of boxes that have proven particularly useful.

Thierryzar25 Jun 2023 07:12Hi, I use stackable boxes with handles in my PAX wardrobe, along with shelves at matching heights. This allows me to easily pull out several boxes stacked on top of each other. Dividers for drawers are also very practical.
The issue with small boxes in the PAX wardrobe system can be approached very systematically. Here is a brief guide:
1. Room Analysis: Measure the shelf height precisely. Sometimes a slight adjustment of the shelves is necessary.
2. Box Selection: Ideally, use stackable, sturdy boxes with transparent sides so the contents are visible. Make sure the boxes fit exactly to the shelf height (e.g., 10cm (4 inches) or 15cm (6 inches) high).
3. Organizing Boxes: Use sorting compartments or small dividers inside the boxes, especially for socks and accessories. It is also worthwhile to add labels.
4. Consider Alternatives:
- Drawers with fixed inserts for small items
- Open shelves with boxes
- Using flat storage bags that fit into taller compartments
5. Important: Do not overfill the boxes, as this makes them difficult to pull out.
Common mistakes I often see include boxes that are too tall or too short for the compartment, or too many loose items without clear separation.
In summary: Planning, suitable boxes, sorting into smaller units, and individually adjusting the shelves bring a lot of order.
This can also be combined with IKEA’s internal planning tools or other storage systems, depending on personal preference.

Important: Don’t overload the boxes too much, or they will be difficult to pull out. That’s a very important tip! I made the mistake myself of overfilling boxes, and it made handling more difficult. It’s better to use several smaller boxes to create more structure.
Also, it helps a lot if the boxes or inserts fit securely on the shelf – no shifting forward or backward, so the boxes don’t slide around.
One idea I still like to recommend are these narrow boxes for cutlery or small tools – they fit perfectly into thin, tall compartments that are otherwise hard to use.
And regarding your point about visibility: transparent or at least light-colored boxes really help with quick identification. They can cost a bit more, but in my opinion, it’s worth it.
