Hello everyone,

I recently bought several Billy shelves from IKEA and plan to use them in my basement, which occasionally gets a bit damp. Since the shelves are made of particleboard, I am concerned about potential water damage or moisture exposure that could affect their stability and appearance.

Are there proven methods or protective measures to effectively safeguard Billy shelves against water damage? I am especially interested in practical tips for sealing, technical protective solutions, and suitable additional products.

Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hey welfsi, this is a really important topic! 🙂

My tip right away: Clear varnish works for me like a protective shield against moisture! Just seal the entire shelf with a water-repellent clear varnish, and it holds up much better than you might expect.

Also, I always use small rubber or plastic feet under the shelves to prevent moisture from rising up from the floor. This is super practical and protects perfectly against rising damp.

Try it out, you’ll see it makes a HUGE difference! Good luck with it 🙂

Exactly, and if you’re really interested, you can also treat it with a natural plant oil – sounds odd, but linseed oil soaks really well into the wood and creates a natural barrier.

I once refreshed an old chair this way, and since then the wood has held up great even with some water exposure.

Just a suggestion in case you want to try it – it’s a more pleasant alternative to the plastic-like effect of varnish 😉

I believe you shouldn’t rely solely on thin sealants but also address the root cause of the moisture.

If you say the basement is occasionally damp, it’s more effective in the long run to improve ventilation or use a dehumidifier.

Using just a clear varnish or oil might protect temporarily, but it doesn’t help much with consistently high humidity.

The shelf will eventually swell if exposed to persistent moisture, no matter how thick the sealant is.

What is the general humidity level like in your space? Have you measured it?

Good question, I only have a rough estimate so far. My hygrometer app shows values between 60 and 70% relative humidity, especially during the winter. Unfortunately, that’s not ideal, I know.

Improvements to the ventilation are currently planned but have not yet been implemented.

My main concerns are the duration of exposure and the inevitability of high humidity.

Does anyone have suggestions for additional precautions that work regardless of the humidity level?

Hello welfsi,

in such cases, a combination of measures often helps. Besides clear varnish or oil on the surfaces, you can also place waterproof protective films on the floors where the shelving unit will stand.

Additionally, I recommend coating the shelves inside with water-repellent paint or a transparent wood preservative to make it harder for moisture from the surroundings to penetrate.

It is also important not to place the shelving unit directly against the wall, allowing air to circulate. This reduces mold growth and moisture buildup.

These simple guidelines are very helpful, even if the basement remains damp. 🙂
