Hello everyone, I am currently planning to enhance the appearance of my IKEA Billy bookcases and would like to hear your ideas and experiences. I am especially interested in how to improve the design so that the shelves fit elegantly and individually into modern living spaces without completely covering up the classic design. What materials, colors, or techniques have you used to visually upgrade the typically simple Billy bookcase? I am thinking about things like adding decorative moldings, color variations, lighting, or maybe changing the back panels. I would appreciate concrete tips and also insights regarding effort and costs. Thanks in advance!

That sounds really exciting! I once framed my Billy shelves with wooden slats and stained them dark – it looks very elegant and really highlights the minimalist IKEA design! 🙂 I also installed LED strips inside that can be controlled with a remote – it’s truly brilliant for creating a cozy atmosphere in the evening.

The combination of wood and lighting makes a huge impact, I can only recommend it! Especially as a DIY project, these small upgrades are totally doable and give you a really unique look.

For upgrading: completely sand down the shelving unit, then apply a fresh coat of paint or use a vinyl wrap. Back panels can be replaced or wallpapered. Install warm white LED strips on the inside. Decorative trims made of wood or MDF are suitable for the edges.

The LED strips really create a great atmosphere! 🙂 I once upgraded a small Billy bookshelf by combining white shelves with gold metal edge trims – it almost looks like a designer piece. When you add some nice plants and personal items, the shelf becomes the star of the room. Sometimes, it’s the little details that make all the difference!

I’m curious, Mansan, which room and for what purpose do you plan to use the shelves?

This is an important question for choosing the right materials. For living spaces, a low-maintenance and abrasion-resistant finish is always recommended, ideally acrylic-based. For electronic devices, ensure sufficient ventilation within the shelf, even though LED strips can be easily integrated. Mansan, if you like, you can also provide the dimensions and shelf types (e.g., deeper variants) to get more specific advice.

Good morning, thanks for the tip, andre3. The shelves are the classic Billy model, 80x28cm (31.5x11 inches) with a height of 202cm (79.5 inches) each. Indeed, top priority is given to appearance and atmosphere, with less focus on technology. Some individuality should be added with warm natural tones and soft lighting. Ventilation for electronics is not an issue for me either, as I only place a few devices in the open area.

Proper ventilation in the shelving should be ensured for electronic devices

Exactly, this should not be underestimated. Especially with LED lighting combined with electronic equipment, heat buildup and airflow can be potential issues.

Furthermore, I recommend using a thin plywood panel for raising the back wall and enhancing the appearance, as it is easy to customize. Upholstered fabric panels are another option, creating a very cozy surface. Mansan, do you already have a preference for the back walls: wood or fabric?
