Hello everyone,
I recently bought several Billy shelves from IKEA and plan to use them in my basement, which occasionally gets a bit damp. Since the shelves are made of particleboard, I am concerned about potential water damage or moisture exposure that could affect their stability and appearance.
Are there proven methods or protective measures to effectively safeguard Billy shelves against water damage? I am especially interested in practical tips for sealing, technical protective solutions, and suitable additional products.
Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

The shelf will always eventually swell if exposed to consistent moistureI agree with that. It’s frustrating to invest so much in shelves only to see them get damaged in the end.
I once tried wrapping my Billy shelves with a thin PVC film to make them waterproof from the outside, so to speak. It was an experimental solution, but it actually improved their durability.
The most important thing is to address the source of moisture and regularly inspect the shelves, rather than relying solely on sealants.
We all want our furniture to last a long time, right? 🙂

I recently bought some BILLY shelves from IKEA and plan to use them in my basement, which occasionally gets a bit dampI know the feeling of setting up furniture in a damp basement. What helps me is regularly dusting and checking the shelves, as well as placing small silica gel packets or other moisture absorbers behind the shelves.
Sometimes it’s the small everyday steps that make the difference – good for the furniture and for you.
Keep at it, and I’m hoping you find the best solution soon! 🙂
